Are you traveling over the holiday weekend?

Be sure to check out some of California’s “Geo Gems” - notable geologic features in California state parks. These geologic wonders illustrate the legacy and continuing geologic evolution of California.

A few years ago I had a partner who was a former roboticist. Through her I became acutely aware of how much of public-facing robotics is now is pure theatrical smoke and mirrors horseshit intended to dupe credulous tech press and VCs.

This is one of the Stripe-throated Hermit #hummingbirds that lives in the forest near my office. It comes out regularly to enjoy some nectar and then zips back into the dark.

I picked up No Players Online both to support it after the DMCA thing and because I wanted to see how they expanded what was in the Haunted PS1 Demo Disk version, but no one told me it went all-in on the 90s OS/Internet as a framing device! I love this stuff.

“One mile on a bike is a $.42 economic gain to society, one mile driving is a $.20 loss.”

“Which means that Copenhagen, a city of 1.2 million people, saves $357 million a year on health costs because something like 80% of its population commutes by bike.” #CityMakingMath

Some costs aren’t costs.
One mile on a bike is a $.42 economic gain to society, one mile driving is a $.20 loss
Copenhagen, the bicycle-friendliest place on the planet, publishes a biannual Bicycle Account, and buried in its pages is a rather astonishing fact.

Here's my review of the Nikon ZR I did for @theverge.com.

Even if R3D NE isn't quite what you get from a real RED, the ZR gets damn close, with a few benefits you won't get from a RED body.

TIL about a memorial ceremony in Iceland in 2019 to mark the end of a glacier, changing the place name from Okjökull to Ok (jökull = glacier). Uncompromising wording on the bronze plaque:
"This is to acknowledge that we know what is happening and what needs to be done. Only you know if we did it".

If you call it a “male immaturity epidemic,” a very different set of phenomena come into focus, as this thread shows
I'm starting to wonder how much "the male loneliness epidemic" is just straight and bisexual women identifying low-effort, mean, and incompetent men and choosing not to date, marry, and tolerate them anymore

I also attended the full Netflix conference call discussing the proposed deal and the VAST majority of chatter was focused on film and television (and IP ownership).

This 'Business Overview' slide contained the only mention of WB's video game business.

This week on my patreon I wrote about a map of a special place in Florida. Yes, really!

Meant to have a 100 Acre Woods feel, it was a project for a client moving away from a beloved spot, and hoping to take it with her in spirit.

The post is free, so give it a read!

Just now: M2.4 + M2 solar flares from AR 4299 and AR 4294, respectively. There is a CME associated with the former that looks to have a substantial Earth-directed component! Great news for aurora chasers to mark a potentially THIRD Earth-directed CME hitting this week.

I don't think enough people understand that we are the ones who are going to pay for this. Spikes in electricity demand are one of the only ways our electric companies are allowed to raise rates on us without government approval. We are going to pay for the new plants for data centers.

Klamath River steelhead fishing. A gorgeous canyon where four dams were demolished to improve water quality and allow fish passage. Caught a few half- pounders and had the obligatory big one that got away.
