Pushcart nominee currently working on two novels (querying one, writing the other) and a brown belt in kung fu. Like Liz Lemon, technically a modern-day cowboy. Previous publications at katiedepasquale.com
This story is such a bummer, and to quote from @gabino.bsky.social’s great post: “I truly feel that BOOKS THAT DON’T FUCKING EXIST shouldn’t get more coverage than books that exist and were written by humans and everything.” Using AI this way is beyond pathetic.

This piece is wonderful, as always, though I did keep hearing “spooklight” in Mater’s voice - anyone else remember that Cars short where he sees the ghostlight out on Rt 66?

Saw and loved Sinners, can’t stop thinking about it, and about Ryan Coogler’s brilliant deal to retain final cut rights and own the film again in 25 years. Love seeing artists have control over their work!

Reality jumps the shark again.
Katy Perry “couldn’t recommend this experience more,” which is useful information for those deciding between space travel and booking a basic economy ticket on Spirit that doesn’t let you carry on any luggage so you have to wear 13 layers of clothing onto your flight

Supported my local library by buying books at their book sale today. So many good options, I don’t know which to read first! Guess I’ll add them to my already giant to-read pile….

This whole thread about Rick Steves’s recent speech is great. Looking forward to watching the whole thing.
First, Steves finds a way to talk about institutions and oligarchy that is dirt simple:

1. Institutions are PUBLIC WEALTH. They are our shared wealth, dammit.
2. Billionaires can't stand wealth they don't control.
3. So they are going to dismantle our public wealth to better bleed us dry

Yup. My mom called to check something and was told her wait time was 112 minutes. She gave up.
The Social Security Administration has already cut 7,000 jobs.

As a result, its website is crashing. Phone lines are overwhelmed. Beneficiaries can't get service.

What is DOGE recommending now? More layoffs.

Let it be known that Trump is effectively cutting Social Security.

FFS. We need a new term for this because AI “creative writing” is nothing but a kaleidoscope of regurgitation. I have no interest in writing without a human soul behind it.
The new OpenAI creative writing bot's "short story" has the phrase "democracy of ghosts". It's the sort of phrase that would make me stop and admire it, if I were reading a human author - which, it turns out, I was, because it's from Nabokov's 1957 novel "Pnin".

Re Zelensky at the WH, yet again, feminists and trauma/abuse- informed thinkers are years ahead of political analysts.

There is no acceptable affect, no way to charm an abuser, and no “deal” other than playing very very dead that would change how Trump and his flying monkey Vance behaved.
