There are three kinds of joy in this world:
1. When your hope is rewarded.
2. When the hope of people you love is rewarded.
3. When Manchester City suffer.

Hold on! Are you telling me, you can't use another entity's proprietary data for you own benefit? Strange.

Nvidia shares' 9% recovery Tuesday was the second-best day in terms of market cap added for any company ever, trailing only a record it set in July.

Automatically booking a table at a restaurant and all that is okay. But can OpenAI Operator reliably get me confirmed tatkal tickets on IRCTC?

Few things are scarier than a group of three friends standing in front of you in the line at the coffee shop — unsure what drink they want, in what configuration, and who will pay whom. ☕️

Early morning flights are full of classy people and silent farts.

This is the kind of wisdom I want to leave my children with.

That time of the year when tech sites publish a list of the best fitness trackers to buy. I’ve always maintained that adding a fitness tracker to your wrist shaves off at least one kilogram of weight.

A humpback whale travelled 13,000+ kilometres from near Colombia in the Pacific Ocean to Zanzibar in the Indian Ocean. It's among the longest migrations ever undertaken by a mammal and might have been driven by the need to feed or the need to mate.
Whale makes epic migration, astonishing scientists
A humpback whale makes one of the longest and most unusual migrations ever recorded, raising alarm.

I love that we live on a planet where Orcas wear salmons as hats — possibly because they might feel snacky later on.

No offence, of course, to the salmons. You just live in an orca-eat-salmon world.
Orcas have begun wearing salmon hats again – and we may soon know why
About 40 years ago, researchers noticed a population of orcas had begun swimming around with dead fish on their heads, and now the craze is back

Denver gave people experiencing homelessness $1k/month. A year later, nearly half had housing.

They also had fewer ER visits, nights spent in a hospital, and jail stays.

The report estimates that this reduction in public service use SAVED the city $589k.

Denver gave people experiencing homelessness $1,000 a month. A year later, nearly half of participants said they had housing.
Participants in Denver's basic-income program reported having more-secure housing, though results were similar in the trial and control groups.

Writers, do you sometimes catch yourself thinking, "I know how to do this, but should I probably... maybe... use AI assistance? Because, you know, I'm probably missing out on what everyone (mostly tech bros and consultants) is saying is 'the new way of working.'"

So, we have heard of melting permafrost waking up ancient microbes. Now, melting glaciers are exposing rocks that leech toxic metals into rivers and lakes – turning water red and acidic. Climate change is going to hit us in ways we can't even imagine.
Where Glaciers Melt, the Rivers Run Red
As the glaciers of South America retreat, the supply of freshwater is dwindling and its quality is getting worse.

As someone who has psoriasis+psoriatic arthritis (close cousins of eczema), this is particularly worrying.
Mounting evidence points to air pollution as a cause of eczema
Air pollution has been linked to eczema before, and now a study of more than 280,000 people has strengthened the association

An old piece, but just as relevant.
The climate crisis demands courage not optimism
Instead of asking about optimism, it’s time to ask what we as citizens are going to do about climate change.

I see these "fun" experiments where people are abusing AI or kicking robots to make them fall. I see people laughing and commenting on these posts. I don't think we're creating the right impression on our future overlords.

Possibly the most important advice I’ve heard in a while — as a writer and as someone who tends to stand on the liberal side of a discourse.
My best piece of advice is “You can’t change a feeling with a fact”

10 years ago, I would’ve tried to fight a person saying so. Facts matter! Past me & current me still agree on that, if nothing else, so I wanted to write about how I got from there to here.

PS - we have a buttondown now!

Bluesky is now officially the social media site where I have the largest number of followers (after the former Twitter, where, however, the numbers are inexorably trending downward). I celebrate this achievement, naturally, with a photo of a cat.
