It's not march of the penguins, but the great migration of flies is major force in ecosystems and economies.

In a new paper, scientists make a compelling case for preserving migration corridors for hundreds of species of tiny flies.

Lords of the flies: the unsurpassed level of ecological diversity within dipteran migrants.

Read about it here news.exeter.ac.uk/faculty-of-e... and in Biological Reviews here doi.org/10.1111/brv..... New research from @uniexecec.bsky.social with @willleohawkes.bsky.social & Myles Menz
Migrating flies vital for people and nature
Buzzing insects may be seen as pests – but globally, hundreds of fly species migrate over long distances, with major benefits for people and nature, new research shows. Bugs such as houseflies, fruitf...

Our brief insect migration reccy to southern Spain is done now. Locations scouted and camera traps set up on Gibraltar to hopefully record fly migration as they arrive to Europe from Africa.

New paper out today from our lab. doi.org/10.1098/rsob...

We unpick the morphological 🧑‍🧒, physiological 🔬, behavioural 📟 and transcriptomic 🧬 differences contributing to female sex bias in migrating #hoverflies. See my work on flight performance in this paper 🪰💪🪽

Multiple factors contribute to female dominance in migratory bioflows | Open Biology
Migration is a widely observed phenomenon supported by morphological, physiological and behavioural traits that vary with season and sex in many species. Recently, the genetic components underpinning migration in the marmalade hoverfly (Diptera: Syrphidae)...
