Great news. Only for a few days but one step towards a pernament passenger rail network in the South Island.

After decades of abandoned business cases, but much yearning, long-distance passenger rail is returning to the South Island, aimed largely at people visiting Dunedin.

As someone who lives in East Auckland and has to go past the flyover to get to other parts of Auckland, the reason for all the traffic in the first place is the lack of viable alternatives to driving. Removing cyclelanes is just quadrupling down on failed solutions.

Building more roads does not work. This has been known for decades. The flyover didn't address the fact that East Aucklanders don't have a viable alternative to driving.

And the apparant solution from the local MP is to remove a non existant cyclelane.

Never thought about this before but this is quite alarming. Slow down if you're driving so that those young and old can get home safely.
Happy Halloween!

The scariest thing about tonight isn't the costumes, it's the road safety stats.

Halloween sees a 30% spike in crashes involving people walking or cycling w/ 1/3 of these crashes between 4-8pm, peak trick-or-treating hours.

Drivers: slow down tonight so everyone gets home safe.

Building new roads to reduce congestion simply doesn't work. Ra Hihi is the latest example of thousands around the world as to why this is the case.

We can build a comphrensive rapid transit network in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch and have regional rail for the price of these roads. Which will also benefit significantly more people.

Auckland's rail map once CRL opens next year went up today.

Map is pretty confusing for the South-City line. It loops back and ends at Otahuhu but looking at this map you wouldn't think that's the case.

Plan to do a video on post CRL network early next year.
