I'm not going to say "Reagan didn't do shit," but he certainly wasn't the main driving factor of the Fall and the prevalence of this false belief among Eastern Europeans is disturbing because it speaks to a critical lack of self-confidence in our ability to be historical actors ourselves.

I think some folk legitimately Don't Get this important cultural distinction. You can say it arises from those of us in Eastern Europe being brainwashed nationalists, you can say it arises from us having polities that were much more hard-won and consciously defined, but the distinction exists.
this is the whole thing i once did on twitter where i ran polls asking different groups of people to say yes or no on whether they find "[name of your country] should be destroyed" a threatening sentiment and westerners invariably answered "no," and our kind invariably answered "yes."
