Edmonton transit peace officers gave over three million dollars worth of trespass tickets to people with no fixed address in 2024. That’s 90% of all the trespass tickets they gave, and 51% of all tickets of any kind they gave to anyone.

New Op-Ed: Edmonton council made right call on rejecting infill cap

In a time where Edmonton is growing the fiscally responsible thing to do was to keep mid-block infill at 8 units, on large enough lots.

Opinion: Edmonton council made right call on rejecting infill cap
On Tuesday, the city council supported a motion to keep mid-block infills to a maximum of eight units and I’m grateful.

It's a shame to see a city that has been leading on housing proposing to go backwards. Once you've got a shortage, land prices go up and it becomes harder to dig your way out (ask us how we know). Edmonton was being proactive and avoided the fate of most of Canada's cities as a result.
The first is to reduce the overall amount of housing that can get built on a given lot. This reduction of housing is justified by reduced shadowing and potential increase in parking. Perversely, it also lists the reduction of overall housing by 8% as an intended positive outcome.

Forgot what’s probably the most important change, making multiplexes go through public hearing again instead of just planning approval. Adding uncertainty, process and time kills a lot of projects.
And discretionary approval processes are a fertility drug for NIMBYs.

Housing is good, actually. People derive tremendous value from living in housing. If you make it harder to build housing for people you better have a really good reasons, and I am not seeing any here.
Councillor @michaeljanz.bsky.social's motion to downzone large swaths of Edmonton passes the committee to a public hearing on June 30.

Horrible, cynical motion pandering to a vocal minority of NIMBYs to win votes in an election year.

#yeg is moving in wrong direction.
We need a bold council and administration that can say No to NIMBYs! (Sorry to steal the CPC playbook with verbing the noun) but we do need urban density!
1. Wrongheaded sounding move by a city councillor in Edmonton, a city that’s generally been making good strategic moves around doing density better.

2. #GentleDensity is meant to support raising density that’s too low, not lowering density that’s smart and strategic (I coined the term in 2006).
NIMBY appeasement (even though they say they aren't NIMBYs). One of the speakers thinks the level of infill development is happening too fast (even though it isn't), and says we need "gentle density" to them meaning they need to review every single infill over 6 units.

It seems more like a few councillors are trying to appease some NIMBY's, hoping to get re-elected, instead of doing what they should know is the right thing.

ZBR is working. Cost of living is growing less here than elsewhere, and they will undermine it for people that still won't vote for them.

Here's a stat for #yegcc: there's been exactly 3 rowhouses with 6-8 units approved for building in all of Belgravia since 2024. 0 of them are completed.

Hardly "dropping 8plexes" or a "wave" or "avalanche" of infill.

Such a waste of time over such slow change.

I'm appalled that #yegcc has to entertain this regressive & cynical proposal to rollback our zoning bylaw, limiting a lot to 6 units (currently 8). Election in Oct. I sure hope the rest of the UP Committee has the courage to stand up to bullies.

This rowhouse in Queen Alexandra provides homes for 8 families near Whyte Ave.

Edmonton's zoning bylaw renewal enables more people to live in the central, walkable neighbourhoods they love.

If the rollbacks to the zoning bylaw renewal pass on June 30, this type of housing would be illegal. #yegcc

Tomorrow, @michaeljanz.bsky.social will move a motion to roll back a key changes in the zoning renewal.

He wants to limit the number of units on midblock lots from 8 to 6. This would kill hundreds of homes.
