Hubris and unchecked power almost always leads to overreach. And while someone CAN do something & they may try does not always mean that they are successful. People have a way of doing themselves in if given enough rope and time.

My thought: Trump is pissed that Rick Scott is passed over for Majority Leader. Gotta punish the Senate & give Gaetz a reason to step down. Appoint Gaetz AG to piss off mainline Senate. Ultimately DeSantis appoints buddy Gaetz to Senate seat.
