Finding memory leaks in unsafe Rust is fun... /s

Excited to share a summary of a recent paper I published at HotStorage'25 on PaperCache, an in-memory cache that can dynamically switch its eviction policy at runtime, written in Rust!

PaperCache: In-Memory Caching with Dynamic Eviction Policies
Caches play a critical role in improving the performance of modern computer systems. They temporarily store copies of data that are likely to be needed again soon on media that is faster but more cost...

I am once again asking @bsky.app for proper 2FA support (not just email verification codes).

I don't see Zig's selling point. Rust guarantees memory safety, but is Zig just supposed to be C with new syntax? Doesn't seem to be solving a problem...

Heads up to anyone using the serde_yml crate (crates.io/crates/serde...), or any crate by the same author. It's maintained using AI generated code and is extremely poor quality, even leading to seg faults...

Highly recommend switching away from these types of crates and their authors...

Buckle up because we're banging into the new year with my annual retrospective of the last year in databases! Highlights include license change blowback, Databricks vs. Snowflake gangwar, @duckdb.org's shotgun weddings, and buying a quarterback to impress your lover: www.cs.cmu.edu/~pavlo/blog/...

Let’s assume for a minute that Trump really is “just joking” about Canada becoming a U.S. State (he’s not…his lip-smacking over this incredibly insulting “idea” was 100% predictable). Consider how offensive and un-diplomatic referring to a leader of a sovereign nation & close ally as “Governor” is.

Is @bsky.app going to get proper 2FA app support anytime soon?

I don't understand why we don't simply put the painted bike lanes on the sides of buildings so the cars have more space...
NEW: CycleToronto and other citizens have launched a Charter challenge of the Ford government's law to remove bike lanes. CT's executive director is not present at the Queen's Park announcement because... he was doored on Monday in a painted bike lane and is hospitalized.

“Scientists don’t know everything and have sometimes been wrong before”

Does not mean

“random nonsense you just thought of is as likely to be correct as something overwhelmingly endorsed by experts and supported by evidence and should be treated with as much respect.”

People not elected to government should not have the power to reshape the government, especially people whose obscene wealth depends on the government functioning a certain way.

This is not a hot take.

It's just plain common sense.

Next year, I'm picking one song and only listening to that, daily. I'd give it 50/50 odds that it breaks Spotify's UI during the next recap.
99% of Spotify Wrapped lists consist of "5 music superstars" or "5 artists you've never heard of". Boring.

I only care about the remaining 1%. The perplexing weirdos. The freaks who have spent the year listening to tuba death metal, screaming goats, and the soundtrack to Honey, I Shrunk the Kids.

Scientists, academics, researchers: We’re excited to share that @altmetric.com is now tracking mentions of your research on Bluesky! 🧪
There are already many articles for which there is more attention on Bluesky than on other comparable micro-blogging sites, meaning the academic community and the general public have clearly adopted Bluesky as one of its core places to disseminate and discuss new research.

A Place of Joy.
