Im a support engineer.
Its much different than a developer role.
I make sure the my companies infrastructure and business applications stay online and work properly.
Its about being reactive to new issues and preventative with reocurring problems.

If you want your leaders to make better decisions on what you should be building, get them data. Show them hard numbers on what users are doing (not what you THINK they're doing). Build an admin area where they can see the app data.
Help them be informed.

If you need to back up a partition on a drive, i suggest either using rsync or partclone.
Rsync will individually back up each file in the source path to the destination path.
Partclone will create a .img file backup of the partition.

One of the toughest things im currently going through is having to say no to doing some software engineering work.
If i accepted then i would be picking up someone elses mess. Trust me when i say you need to do your homework on every project you have an opportunity to work.
