A friend on fb recently posted someone's "thoughts on yesterday's executive order mandating the adoption and use of 'generative AI' in k-12 education" -- Bsky friends, what are they talking about? Could someone please post news links to the executive order? I've seen/heard nothing about this.

I’m about to board my flight to El Salvador, where I hope to meet with senior government officials to discuss the return of Kilmar Abrego Garcia.

I also hope to see Kilmar and check on his condition — and remind him that we won’t stop fighting until he’s home.

I think the federal government should 'realign the liberal tilt of universities' just as soon as they finish realigning the conservative tilt of military bodies.

Harvard Will Not Comply With a List of Trump Administration Demands
Federal officials said Harvard must enact “merit-based reform” in hiring and admissions and report international students who broke rules, among other steps. Harvard called the demands unlawful.

White House: “We spoke with the big three auto dealers. We are going to give a one-month exemption on any autos coming through USMCA,” the 2018 United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement.
My confusion: Why isn't every story on the tariffs pointing out that the USA is violating the existing trade treaty?

Stop calling it a deal
“A peace deal.” “Commitment to a deal.” Although Canada and the USA are at odds at the moment, here’s something they have in common: In both countries, their major newspapers repeatedly refer to the proposals of President Trump to the leader of Ukraine as deals. 1/3

The breezy comment by Bezos that anyone can find anything on the interwebz is grating, and in keeping with the trend toward replacing the judgement of persons with expertise, training, and caring --- who needs an editor when we have whatevs! Alas. 2/2

The Washington Post turns away from editorial traditions that I have always valued: judicious editorial selection and provision of an array of perspectives worth reading, that express what the section editor and team believe to be worthwhile and informative ways of looking at current issues. 1/2

we don’t talk enough about this aspect of our current moment: the sadness and grief of losing institutions that were once so important to us, because they proved unworthy of our support. and it is real grief, because we lose what those institution might have been, if only they had been better.
thank god i used my personal liberties to cancel my subscription last year. (which was painful as someone who worked with wapo for YEARS. i cried the first time i walked into that building bc i was so happy to be there.)

I’m writing to let you know about a change coming to our opinion pages.
We are going to be writing every day in support and defense of two pillars: personal liberties and free markets... viewpoints opposing those pillars will be left to be published by others.

(this is something WAGING A GOOD WAR drove home: the civil rights movement was likewise faced with a media and narrative environment that was pretty deeply unjust. they had to figure out how to win in that environment--whining about it, retreating from it, giving up--none of those produce victory)

I increasingly think the biggest short-term danger of AI comes from humans not understanding what it actually does, treating it like some sort of oracle.
You say that, but I’m hearing from many people in education that students are using Chat GPT for their history coursework and are defiantly refusing to be corrected by teachers and lecturers that the information they’re getting is wrong
