NSF GRFP solicitation out.
App deadlines now in November.
As others noted, eligibility rules for current graduate students now exclude 2nd year grad students. See the solicitation - they’ve emphasized “first year” and “less than one academic year” in grad program.

I still think about that engineering student in my classroom who, after a class on Nazi medicine, science, and technology in a survey class, had this stunned look on his face, and asked me why this wasn’t mandated for everyone who went through programs like his.
Students WANT what we teach.

Ex-farm worker here.

We need to talk about this whole "But a living wage for farm workers would spike the cost of food!" thing.

Not true AT ALL.

Y'all don't understand how fast experienced farm workers are.

The average tomato picker pulls 650lbs per hour.

At $20/hr, that's $0.03/lb for labor.

It gets a lot worse. Now current postdocs in the program are going unpaid.

Advice distilled from an NSF PO:

Apply for NSF funding this year. Because NSF's current policy is to forward-fund active projects (e.g. pay down their mortgage on the future years of funding), there are plausible budget scenarios where NSF has a LARGE budge to spend next fiscal year (on your grant)
