Uptick in arrivals in Crete & the Balearics seem to result from EU’s short-term migration strategy: securitising routes & targeting smugglers via deals with third countries—without addressing migration drivers or the links between regular & irregular migration.

Many Latin Americans in transit hit by new US migration policies are heading south. But the cost of the journey north has left people with few resources to return, forcing riskier travel. 3 routes from Panama to Colombia - many avoid the Darien after traumatic northbound journey.

In Latin America, abrupt changes in U.S. migration policy have left migrants in transit stranded, without options for regular entry, exposed to fear. Many are heading south with few options, few resources, and little help. Their journeys are shaped by pressure & uncertainty 1/2

Our societies are so data driven on some issues... and then there is this
How do we count the dead? From West Africa to the Canaries, 2024 estimates of migrant deaths on the Atlantic range from 1,062 to 9,757.
Why such a gap? What does it say about how deaths are tracked or overlooked?
Uncounted & Unknown: Tracking deaths & disappearances on the Atlantic & other irregular migration routes | Mixed Migration Centre

An excellent article, must read on migration to Europe and specifically on the Atlantic route, on tracking deaths and disappearances, on humanising what this means, and informing policy
Why do death estimates on the Atlantic migration route differ by nearly 10x? What does that say about how migrant deaths are tracked or overlooked? Peter Grant, Roberto Forin and @bramfrouws.bsky.social look at the role of data in understanding the scale of migrant deaths & implications on policy 🔗⬇️

Beyond restrictions: migration & smuggling across the Mediterranean, the Atlantic & the English Channel
This study focuses on three key routes into the EU, including the Central Mediterranean route (CMR), the two major routes into Spain – the Western Mediterranean route (WMR) and the Northwest African (Atlantic route)– as well as the English Channel crossing into the United Kingdom1, to understand how migration and smuggling dynamics have shifted since 2023, as well as the impact of these shifts on people on the move.

Our latest on migration & smuggling to Europe - with info on different 4 main routes- shows how current policies are damaging to people and counterproductive to managing migration. Hardline policies create demand for migration as people suffer in transit countries, even those who wanted to stay.

When reading out latest data on smuggling in Central Sahel, what struck me is that smugglers seem more like trusted travel agents than the criminal orgs one might imagine. Even some people with legal documents prefer using smuggling services to travel, rather then regular channels. What's going on?
We interviewed 1,980 migrants who used smugglers in Central Sahel, what did we find out? ✔️ 83% of migrants said smugglers helped them achieve their goal. ❌ 17% felt they were intentionally misled. Most (60%) migrants had legal documents yet used irregular channels to travel.
