The #CopernicusEU Sentinel-1 mission welcomes a new member: Sentinel-1D, launched at 21:02 GMT/22:02 CET from Kourou on Ariane 6 #VA265.

The Sentinel-1 mission – which provides radar vision for the Copernicus Earth observation programme – has a new addition to its family of satellites, with the arrival in orbit of Sentinel-1D, the last of the groundbreaking first generation. The launch took place at 22:02 CET (18:02 local time), on Tuesday, 4 November, on board an Ariane 6 launcher from Europe’s Spaceport in French Guiana.

This image captured by Copernicus Sentinel-3 on 26 October 2025 shows the ‘brightness temperature’ at the top of Hurricane Melissa as it moves through the Caribbean Sea towards Jamaica, where it is expected to make landfall. Classified as a Category 5 storm by the US-based National Hurricane Center, Hurricane Melissa is the world’s strongest storm so far this year. The brightness temperature of the clouds at the top of the storm, high above the ocean, range from about –75°C near the eye of the storm to about –25°C at the edges. The temperature of the surrounding ocean is much warmer, reaching as high as 25°C. This image has been overlaid with the landmasses below and is a mosaic of two different swaths, hence the visible diagonal line that crosses the storm.

The new Copernicus Sentinel-4 mission has delivered its first images, highlighting concentrations of atmospheric nitrogen dioxide, sulphur dioxide and ozone. Despite being preliminary, these images mark a major milestone in Europe’s ability to monitor air quality all the way from geostationary orbit, 36 000 kilometres above Earth. This image depicts tropospheric nitrogen dioxide with clear pollution hotspots visible along the Mediterranean coast and over Italy’s Po Valley. This image presents a vertical column density of sulphur dioxide. A distinct plume can be seen emerging from Mount Etna in Italy and drifting south-eastwards over the sea. Although Etna is currently relatively calm, much larger plumes are typically observed during periods of heightened volcanic activity. In addition to natural emissions from volcanoes, sulphur dioxide is also released through human activities, particularly from ships burning high-sulphur fuels and power plants using brown coal. This image shows a vertical column of ozone. While ozone high up in the stratosphere plays a crucial role in shielding life on Earth from harmful ultraviolet radiation, ozone in the lower atmosphere acts as a pollutant, contributing to poor air quality and respiratory problems. The overall ozone levels here are within the expected range. This image of Europe and part of North Africa is based on the first Earth radiance spectra measured by Sentinel-4. The false-colour image, generated by assigning the signals in specific spectral ranges to red, green and blue, shows the land, ocean and clouds as expected.

Den Schutz von Frauen vorzuschieben ist eine gängige Masche in rechten Milieus, die Migration ablehnen. Zugleich sind viele dieser Akteure oft erstaunlich leise, wenn es um konkrete Maßnahmen zur Verhinderung & Ahndung von Gewalt gegen Frauen geht, wenn Täter keinen Migrationshintergrund haben.

Ich saß monatelang im Gerichtssaal mit den Vergewaltigern von Madame Pelicot. Es waren durchschnittliche, unauffällige, weiße Franzosen. Auch jede Statistik zeigt: Die größte Gefahr für Frauen liegt im näheren Umfeld, in der Familie.
Nicht irgendwo in der Stadt. So ein Quark.
