Finished this after hearing about all the controversy and hate surrounding it and...it's just underwhelming? Like it had a few interesting point (the whole the figure of China at the exteriority of Queer Theory™'s anti-universalist framing)

reactionaries aren't stupid, they're just strategic and cruel. for example, it isn't really a coincidence that that one lawyer guy started the terf/gc grift pivot not a week after jkr announced a 1 billion dollar international legal fund to fight trans people (via targeting trans women)

The arrest of online fanfic erotica writers (99% young women) in China is still ongoing, some are getting sentenced to 10 years in prison

I didn’t see any newer international coverage of this but I saw on Weibo today that more writers are getting sentenced right now

Chinese police target writers of gay erotica with prison terms and heavy fines
The crackdown in Anhui has triggered debates about possible abuses of power and whether the law itself is too heavy-handed.

That's what I've been talking about for years, look up who Elaine Chao Mitch McConnell's wife is associated with and why the DOJ tried to pursue her.

The CPC wants Trump to win.
Disturbing ties between Kash Patel and SHEIN — a PRC company implicated in forced labor in Xinjiang. He has millions in shares and won’t divest.

Especially concerning amid reports that DOJ/FBI is going to reduce focus on PRC influence efforts in the US.

bipartisanship with nazis is collaboration.

we all need to make sure we frame it that way when engaging with democrats online. they need to know their shit won’t play this time. they either stand in opposition to fascism or they can get fucked.
Good question from @chrislhayes.bsky.social to Cory Booker, asking if Dems are thinking about the mistake of backing the Iraq war which dragged them down for years.Booker says they are but can't resist some blathering about bipartisanship & grocery prices anyway. They must have all gotten the memo.

Two weeks ago, Artemy fell ill to sudden and severe kidney issues. He fought very hard, and for a time seemed to make a miraculous recovery, but yesterday his condition worsened, and continued to worsen after hospitalization. He passed an hour ago.

I’ll always love you, you fat idiot.

random thought: remember when trans women on here tried to talk about the direct transmisogyny we experience when trying to find housing by having to comb through countless "afab only queer friendly" listings and then people got really mad at us for pointing out how fucked up that is? anyway,

Chinese Court Imposes Life Sentence on Uyghur Scholar
Chinese Court Imposes Life Sentence on Uyghur Scholar
Click to expand Image Rahile Dawut © Lisa Ross On Thursday, the human rights group Dui Hua Foundation confirmed that Chinese authorities have handed down a life sentence on the internationally renowned Uyghur ethnographer Rahile Dawut. This outrageous sentence follows Dawut’s six years of arbitrary detention, punctuated only by a secret trial in December 2018 in which the court found her guilty on baseless charges of “endangering state security.” The news comes on the anniversary of another Uyghur scholar, the economist Ilham Tohti, being sentenced to life imprisonment in 2014. Meanwhile, the Uyghur Human Rights Project has documented that Chinese authorities have forcibly disappeared more than 500 Uyghur intellectuals as of December 2021. The Chinese leadership, including most recently President Xi Jinping, insist their policies across the Xinjiang region in northwest China have achieved “hard won social stability.” Just last week, Chinese diplomats in New York tried to undermine a public discussion of crimes against humanity targeting Uyghurs and other Turkic Muslims taking place on the margins of the United Nations General Assembly, claiming the region has been peaceful for several years. However, there is no real peace for those who remain arbitrarily detained, cut off from family, and endure relentless high-tech surveillance. The government says it’s now focused on “normalization” across the region, but its ongoing repressive practices indicate otherwise. Professor Dawut’s sentence is not evidence of any wrongdoing on her part, but of Beijing’s unrelenting cultural persecution of Uyghurs, hostility to free expression, and disdain for fair trial rights – all serious violations of international law. This development should catalyze renewed international calls for an independent investigation into crimes against humanity in Xinjiang and prompt the academic institutions with which Dawut has had ties, including Cambridge, Cornell, and Harvard Universities, to call for her immediate release. The Chinese government could not make any clearer their chillingly methodical efforts to silence – for life – those Uyghur voices with different views, no matter how peacefully articulated those views are. The outstanding question is whether the rest of the world will let them get away with it.
