This book isn’t about Algeria’s colonisation —no mention of the exploitation of the Muslim population — but about why a “French Rhodesia” did not arise. Military reasons aside, it argues that non-French (mostly Spanish) settlers did not manage to cut ties with France after being “promoted” French.

An interesting book on Germaine Tillion’s life. Ethnographer in Algeria in the 30s, resistant and concentration camp survivor, mediator with the FLN during the Algiers battle. Throughout her life: sense of humour, analysis of situations and ability to link horrors no matter their authors.

Political correctness: timely with Trump 2 and Brexit 5.
In a glance: if elites are prestigious, their ideas are as well, and people with alternative views hide them. If elites misbehave (Great Recession?), their prestige falls, and so does the prestige of their ideas (rebellion against PC).
