At the gorgeous #WigmoreHall on Tuesday. The amazing pianist #FredHersch played one long set, joined later by the fine singer #JoLawry. So many colours - from delicately silvery to darkly threatening - from one solo piano!

Great to see lots of jazz friends in the audience too.

Just returned from a trip to Tallinn with friends from a London-based Estonian choir. A thrill to sing with 30,000+ folk as part of one of the largest song festivals in the world.
They show tremendous pride in their nation's independence and musical culture (without descent into toxic nationalism.)

Lots of folks are mentioning Dave Brubeck today.
Tomorrow I'll be back in the studio recording one of his songs* with FIVE instrumentalists...
(*no - not that one!)

Birthday greetings to Edward Kennedy "Duke" Ellington, born 106 years ago today (and looking particularly handsome here!)
Next week, I'll be in the studio to start recording an album of his tunes. I'm looking forward to working with five fab instrumentalists: guitar, bass, drums, sax and vibes...

Just about to write a birthday card to a friend.
I remembered that I should wish 'Happy Birthday' to William Morris - born 191 years ago, this week.
Morris was born (within a few days) 100 years before my dad. who would have been 91 last week...

Happy St David’s Day!
What’s your favourite springtime song?

These little daffs in our front garden popped their heads out a few days ago - in time to celebrate the first day of the meteorological spring.

Happy Birthday, Mr G - and thank you for everything!

Yesterday - and a pause in the rain long enough to stroll down to the canal bridge. Just past the bend in the canal is Elsden Music's studio.
I'm looking forward to rehearsing some Ellington tunes in the studio next week for the Elsden Music Showcase at Jazz Cafe Posk on 21st March.

Thursday was a lovely day!
After months of planning & practicing, I was back in the studio
trying out some arrangements for my album of Ellington tunes.
A dream-team of instrumentalists: guitar, bass, drums and... vibraphone!
It was a squeeze, but (just) possible to fit everyone in.

Today's Jazz Birthday:

Drummer Chick Webb lead one of the most popular swing bands. They became the house band at the Savoy Ballroom NYC in 1931.
In 1935 Webb started to feature the teenage Ella Fitzgerald as vocalist. Tuberculosis of the spine, caused his early death in 1939, at only 34 yrs.

When I posted about #StephaneGrappelli yesterday, I'd not realised that #DjangoReinhardt 's birthday was a few days earlier on 23rd Jan.
If I had a time machine I'd pop back and see if they had wild joint birthday parties!

Another January jazz birthday:
Born on this day in 1908, French jazz violinist. Stéphane Grappelli was best known as a founder of the Quintette du Hot Club de France with Django Reinhardt.
As a kid, back in the late 70's I saw him play with the Diz Disley trio in Manchester.
I was enthralled!

The 1st jazz birthday of the year:
Milt Jackson was born 102 years ago on this auspicious day. He took up vibraphone after hearing Lionel Hampton in Benny Goodman's band. Jackson was discovered by Dizzy Gillespie, and then formed the Modern Jazz Quartet with John Lewis, Ray Brown, Kenny Clarke.

I made a playlist of Christmas and winter songs (that featured in my Jazzy advent calendar.)
❄ Christmas classics and traditional carols with a jazzy twist
❄ A few winter-themed numbers.
Enjoy!
