We should be looking at Uruguay for more solutions - the frightening thing is the government here is taking us backwards in almost every environmental policy.

No one should forget this.
Also worth noting that our worst paid nurses in New Zealand, the ones whose pay equity claims were thrown in the trash by this government aren't able to join the strike today. But remember that primary health care, aged care and Māori health service nurses stand in solidarity with the strike.

And now we see the astronomical pay rises they awarded themselves. The CAMHS workers who are stretched to the max and spend most of their time at the urgent end of mental health for our young can only dream of these salaries.

This government is excellent at choosing the opposite of what is needed in New Zealand - from workers rights and pay, health, housing, education, environment.. I'm blown away at just how detrimental they are to the wellbeing of so many Kiwis.

There are candidates running in 2025 local elections who are associated with Voices for Freedom. However, the group encourages its affiliates to stand as independents and not declare any VFF link, making it hard for the public and authorities to easily identify them. Do your due diligence people.

In the UK house price-to-wage ratio (hours required)
1970s: £5,000 ÷ £0.90 = 5,556 hours

2024: £284,950 ÷ £11.44 = 24,900 hours

Minimum wage required today to match the 1970s ratio
£284,950 ÷ 5,556 = £51.32 per hour
August 12, 2025 at 3:36 AM
To maintain the same house-price-to-wage ratio as in the 1970s in New Zealand, today’s minimum wage would need to be $910,479 ÷ 24,367 = $37.37 per hour.

Looking further into the 80%pay inc for board chairs for Crown entities and find that the expected average workload for most board chairs remains approximately 140–150 hours per year, or roughly 2.7–3 hours per week. And Chris Bishop wants to vilify nurses for wanting better conditions - GFY.
July 31, 2025 at 1:59 AM
While nurses strike for better pay don't forget the 80% pay inc that mainly affects chairs & board members of certain Crown entities, autonomous Crown entities, & tertiary ed bodies. E.g.the top annual fee for chairs could rise to $160,000 from $90,000.

Key budgetary & policy moves indicate reduced emphasis on expanding renewable incentives, reduced EV support & a regulatory environment more permissive to mining & development activities. This mix raises legitimate concerns about the overall trajectory for NZ’s environmental & climate goals.

Some problems can have a simple solution. Our school mornings were rough when it came time to make the kids put on socks, once I'd bought a few pairs of seamless socks it all went so much better. Realising they weren't being difficult or oppositional but were in distress made a huge difference.

Well that's on me, clicked a link of Guyon Espiner interviewing David Seymour, no doubt my blood pressure is now off the chart. DS is such a contemptible, nasty man who believes he is far more important than he is. Surely, we only have one year left of this awful, backward thinking government.

Pay equity has barely been mentioned in 18 months & suddenly requires emergency legislation to cancel active claims. It's purely about balancing their budget & nothing to do with fairness. These claims take years to work through which shows a rigorous process is already in place.
Janet Wilson's column here is a rare thing in punditry: a clear mechanism of action that is empirically testable

David Seymour spending $10m on 215 students for charter schools is classic ACT. Inefficient taxpayer money spend w/bad results. Interestingly, the documents note charter schools are free to operate as for profit. This ruse is just privatisating our education sector by stealth, funded by us

Charter schools: Seymour defends $10m for 215 students
The cost equates to roughly $46,500 per student and is significantly higher than the core funding per student at a state school, which is just above $9000.

Countries focusing on education, like Finland & Norway, have lower crime rates. Policies inc schooling or improving its quality sig reduce street crime. CoC happy to keep throwing $$ at prisons & the same tired, old policies that do not reduce crime or make communities safer.
