History tells us that pandemics contribute to the rise of fascism. Society has failed to heed that warning.

Ever heard of solar-powered wool? 🐑🤔

👉🏼 Check this out! A new study found merino sheep grazing under #solarpanels in Australia grew stronger, better wool.

A brilliant win for #climate solutions!

Estimated cost of LA fires is in the neighborhood of $150 billion. I don't want to ever again hear the argument that climate policy is too expensive.

100%
There have always been fires, floods, and storms, but climate change worsens their impacts dramatically. Policymakers need to do more to not only mitigate climate change but also to increase societal resilience.

Search for 'obsession' in the dictionary, and you'll find this example:
The next abortion battle will be over the plane tickets and gas money that help women cross state lines, @kristenvbrown.bsky.social reports—as travel plays a larger role in abortion access, it'll also inevitably become a bigger target for abortion opponents.

Plane tickets and gas money will shape the future of abortion in the United States.

Twenty years ago in Somalia, conflict, drought and government collapse threatened to plunge 200,000 people into famine. Out of it came the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification, a linchpin in today’s system for monitoring and alleviating hunger reut.rs/3ODhXTJ
A vast global system exists to prevent famine. It's failing.
The IPC is meant to sound alarms that direct food aid to crisis spots. But the watchdog struggles to operate in areas of conflict – the main driver of hunger.

Penso nas alterações climáticas como um cruzamento entre o 'darwinismo social', a biopolítica (Foucault) e a necropolítica (Mbembe), e me pergunto: até que ponto a perda de vidas é tolerada – ou interessa? A quem isso beneficia?

PS: A descrição "apocalíptica otimista" me caracteriza tão bem. 😮‍💨

A must-read for the scientific community 👇

🔻 Key takeaway: Scientists and scientific organizations can make a significant impact by engaging with policymakers and influential public figures.

I truly believe we must work toward this goal, now more than ever.

Scientists as political advocates
Science, both teaching and doing, is under attack. The recent US presidential election of a person and platform with anti-science bias exemplifies this. The study of climate processes and patterns and...

Completely agree. As a climate change researcher, I often feel like *a bearer of bad news*, but I believe sharing information helps us act proactively and adapt. Still, human behavior is far more complex than this logic.
This. Change is coming, whether you like it or not. And here's a opportunity to paraphrase Anat Shenker-Osorio @anatosaurus.bsky.social: "The job of a leader isn’t to say what's popular. The job of a leader is to make popular what must be said."
You know what else will force people to change their lives? Uncontrolled climate change.

Winter is coming—along with Thanksgiving and Christmas. I wonder if people are still willing to humanize "the other" side.

What do you think?

Is there still room for empathy?

Excellent thread.
I grow a bit weary of complaints that climate work focused on issues of justice and equity “misses the point” or “doesn’t resonate with many in the climate community.” The implicit claim here is that attention to justice and equity are purely political.

They are not.
