Search committees: the 100k H1B fee now appears *not* to apply to change of status applications, so F-1s and J-1s are exempt. #psjminfo

I had precisely this experience in reverse; after years of extolling the virtues of four seasons weather ("autumn is my favourite season!"), I moved to San Diego and discovered that I had been being gaslit my entire life.
After experiencing “four seasons” I’m calling bullshit on people saying they prefer that more than California weather. Bullshit you do. You just experience such a massive dopamine rush in spring after the hell-dark that you rationalize it.

I keep hearing about Chinese transshipment of goods in discussions about the tariffs, which given the estimates we have so far of its magnitude [1], and the already existing restrictions on transshipment initiated by the Biden administration, just makes me think of this:

🧵 Proud to share our new paper in @apsrjournal.bsky.social (open access)!

We used a field experiment to test how contact with citizens shapes POLICE OFFICER attitudes then developed inductive theory about when it works v. backfires.

Paper w/ @matthewjnanes.bsky.social & @nicoravanilla.bsky.social
Just published on APSR First View: "How Does Community Policing Affect Police Attitudes? An Experimental Test and a Theory of Bureaucrat-Citizen Contact" by Dotan Haim, Matthew Nanes, and Nico Ravanilla. www.cambridge.org/core/journal...

Tariffs & exchange rates. A short explainer of the simple case of 10% across-the-board tariffs. Let's start with no retaliation.

Brief version: Tariffs will strengthen the U.S. dollar which will reduce impact on consumers but exacerbate it for exporters.

PSJMInfo. One day more to apply to this great job in one of the 20 best mid-size cities in the USA, according to this very weird list that puts Tallahassee in the same size-category as Tampa and Minneapolis:

Reposting because applications for FSU's IR search are due at the end of the week (Oct. 6), and because I wasn't on the polisky list last time. It's 77 degrees out this October morning as I have my coffee on the balcony, and they had movie night in the park last night. PSJMInfo

@profmusgrave.bsky.social Do I need to do this to be added to the polisky list?

1/ PSJMInfo. FSU is hiring in IR! I cannot say enough good things about the department here – a place so collegial that I enjoy faculty meetings. I am happy to answer questions about the department/position, but for now, let me say some things about the city of Tallahassee.
