Mamdani: Oftentimes when we win elections, we tell people to go home and just trust us. But the message really has to be that we want you to come along with us… That’s something we’ve been looking to share with New Yorkers: We want to not only win with New Yorkers, but also govern with New Yorkers.

Don't look away from this tragedy - this is a sign of things to come as we head to 2ºC

I sound like a broken record - we are *utterly* unprepared.

We need to *urgently* have a clear view of the risks and do something about robust early warning systems that reach people on the ground timeously!

Cool to get some coverage in the New Scientist. I might have rephrased a couple of small things! But the closing paragraphs from Jerome Lewis, especially, are fab.

people died for birthright citizenship. i get that it’s more fun to be a pundit when your team has the white house and you get to brag to friends about visiting the oval office; but what i’m wondering is if maybe that’s actually not a good reason to throw away something we fought a civil war to win?

Focusing on a single incident makes it resonate with the public more. It doesn't somehow justify the other killings, it illustrates the larger problem.

The right is good at this, sometimes in bad faith. For example, Laken Riley.

Basically "one death is a tragedy, a million deaths is a statistic."
Once the debate centers on whether the 2nd strike was legal, the first 21 strikes have been accepted as baseline. But the murder of the two survivors doesn’t make the other 21 any more legal. Selective outrage, not silence, is how authoritarianism becomes normalized @tadstoermer.bsky.social

a fact pattern I've seen repeatedly is Section 8 stops paying their share because the landlord fails an inspection, and then the landlord turns around and sues to evict the tenant (who has continued to pay their share) instead of making the repairs needed to pass inspection and resume Section 8.

I actually disagree here because a lot of my job is suing scumbag eviction attorneys (who are also, legally speaking, debt collectors) and the landlords who hire them. below-market private landlords in particular are fucking demonic.
Most of the crazy and wild shit people on here say about landlords and rentals would be better directed towards the debt collection industry.

That best people in that industry are evil.
your average debt collector routinely breaks the law to steal from poor people, generally with some level of knowledge and callous disregard. there are more altruistic prison guards.

One thing about the Biden admin. is that, two or three levels down, there were tons of smart, focused, pro-social people doing great things that never rose to the level of a headline.

Conversely, an enormous amount of the damage Trumpies are doing never makes the news.
