A periodic reminder that DC is what we call a one-party consent state, meaning you should record any interaction you have with these people because you have the right to.
NEW—Earlier this evening agents from ICE/other fed agencies were outside Rhode Island Ave metro in DC asking people exiting the station for their IDs, per someone who experienced it. When the person presented their Real ID license, an agent said that wasn't sufficient. Luckily they had secondary ID.

Not an original point but worth saying again - there is not a single element in this picture that identifies any of these folks as law enforcement agents. No badges, no uniforms, no vests. Out of context it just looks like a bunch of random guys are kidnapping a mayoral candidate.
Breaking News: Brad Lander, the New York City comptroller who is running for mayor, was detained by ICE agents at an immigration court as he tried to escort a migrant out of the courthouse to prevent his arrest. nyti.ms/4jWkANE

The disparity btwn what’s actually happening in Los Angeles and the way it’s being mischaracterized is one of the biggest stress tests of modern media in recent memory. Botted socials, AI, old clips, declining literacy—it’s like seeing a broken emergency response system hit by a storm.

on January 6th, while attempting to overthrow an election, multiple rioters wore Nazi paraphernalia. they declared their intent to murder elected officials. the right stood steadfastly behind them and are now more powerful than ever. you can stand behind someone waving a Mexican flag.

I'm imagining ICE doing to NYC what it's doing to LA — and the people of NYC responding the way people are in LA — and it all happening under Mayor Cuomo. He'll side with ICE, DHS and, of course, the NYPD. This man, who hates the city and doesn't live here, can not become mayor. Don't rank him.

Some of abundance’s defenders have tried defending more anodyne reforms, but I’d trust them more if it wasn’t a former Grover Norquist intern making their argument
Right wing Dems have the same old plan: sell out workers. These neoliberal policies failed in the 90s, they failed in 2016, they failed in 2024, and they’re going to fail again. In DSA we’re fighting for workers. Look at a socialist policy and you’ll find unions backing it.

if Democrats don't want to be accused of stuff like this they should stop letting Republicans like Barro speak for them imo
I'm not a political scientist but if you're advice to the Democratic Party is pushing out unions, immigrants, and queers then I think there's already a party for that

Bush became unpopular - an electoral millstone around the neck of Republicans - so the media invented a fake story where the current crop of Republicans repudiated Bushism even though literally none of their policies changed except for being harsher on immigrants.
It’s so fucking funny we just spent a week where pundits claimed Republicans turned on Bushism and now Rs are passing an enormous tax cut for rich people

“Laken Riley didn’t get due process, so why should accused members of Tren de Agua?” — this is the thought of a barbarian. The state you envision could never provide the security you claim to desire. It would be locked in brutal, endless war with its people.

Just started watching a YouTube video about chefs making grilled cheese sandwiches and the first words were “what makes a great grilled cheese sandwich? The bread, the cheese” and I nodded quietly, because that is so true
Reminds me of the wingnut welfare on the right where the same conservative book clubs would purchase then give free books to their members thereby pushing all conservative authors up the bestseller lists
It is amazing how much donor money is just sloshing around creating this closed loop of substacks and events that none reads or goes to, which make sure that substack pundits get their speaking fees and podcast appearances. No wonder they think their shit is popular.
Tried to find out who finances this stuff and their PAC especially and it is the kids of billionaires??? Waltons, Murdochs and Gates, lol

I heard Stephen A. Smith tell CNN yesterday that "people are afraid they're going to lose their job for messing up a pronoun" and it really amazes me how many people don't realize they are awash in intentional propaganda designed to make them afraid of the wrong things and angry at the wrong people
Men are not constantly being told “you’re bad,” they are constantly being told “LEFT WING SJWS THINK YOU’RE BAD” by conservative propaganda. There’s a huge difference.
I have two sons, and I don't think I've ever seen messaging going "Don't be a boy" or "YOU'RE BAD."
Sure looks like that's in "I heard someone say that they heard..." territory, rather than actual direct experience.
Also worth noting, the main message from manosphere influencers is "YOU'RE BAD."

At this point I'm honestly just calling my reps and bluntly saying you're old between the two of us I'm the one more likely to survive an ecoli infection. Maybe do something about this.

I was 28 in 2016 and this is an insane characterization of what growing up as a white man in my cohort was like. Demonstrative of how out-of-touch the cultural right is with actual American life www.theredneckintellectual.com/p/right-wing...

OK, its not a question of whether the phone is compromised. If you are the spy chief of a major country's intelligence service and your people have not compromised this phone, you should resign and find some other line of work
