I have spent the last few weeks (read: years) talking to many clients, many of whom are part of LGBTQ+ communities, about their increasing fear given the sociopolitical climate. (1/3)

A disabled person might be “able” to do one thing on one day.

Maybe they wanted to.
Maybe they had no choice and had to.

What it does not mean, is that they’re suddenly able to do it all the time, or that it’ll be “easier next time”.

“Able” is repeatedly, reliably, and safely.

I wish society didn’t tie so much morality into movement.

You are not a better person if you move more.

You are not a worse person if you move less.

We need to be better at recognizing structural barriers to movement, as well as honouring body autonomy.

So often, I hear from neurodivergent people that traditional eating disorder treatment doesn’t meet their needs.

- Neurodivergent traits are often conflated with eating disorder behaviours
- Sensory needs are minimized/ignored
- Neurodivergence is pathologized

This desperately needs to change.

Life as ADHDer would be a lot more manageable if we weren’t forced to work under an oppressive capitalistic system that values productivity over wellbeing and competition over community.

As a neurodivergent person, I want to reclaim the word “weirdo”.

I am absolutely weird. And it’s something I love about myself. I love that I exist outside of society’s arbitrary and oppressive expectations. ♥️

ADHDers:

Instead of asking, “why do I keep failing”, ask, “how is the world/system failing ME?”.

In a world built for neurotypical people that often doesn’t accept or accommodate ADHDers, let’s direct the blame where it belongs (i.e. NOT on you!). ♥️

Fellow healthcare providers:

That part of you that deeply fears you aren’t a capable and helpful practitioner? That’s often also the part of you that deeply cares about your work and the people you support.

There is beauty in that.
