We are saddened by the news that Kongjian Yu (DDes ’95) has passed away. Widely lauded for his concept of the “sponge city,” Yu exerted a strong influence on the GSD, most recently delivering the Sylvester Baxter Lecture in 2023. The GSD offers condolences to Yu’s family, friends, and colleagues.

An admirable master with a generous heart. His design talent and warmth in human connection were among my greatest lessons. His sudden passing is a profound loss to the world of landscape design.

My deepest respect to Yu Kongjian and his family.

Five years ago I was in the #landscape team led by Gross.Max. and working collaboratively with #Grimshaw Architects for the expansion of #Heathrow Airport. I remember the day we received the notice to stop drawing as I was still having the plans opened on the computer.
