Pitch for a new spy movie: a CIA agent spends years getting close to a terrorist suspect then just before he gets the crucial piece of evidence he’s fired and replaced with a teenager who doesn’t speak any foreign languages but does have a lot of followers on X.

Everybody dies.

Half of this thing works, but then Georgy boy just can't help himself.

A front-runner or perhaps the only contender for the "best character demise because they can't drive a manual transmission rocket car" award

A ★★½ review of THX 1138 (1971)
A visually striking film let down by an un-even second half. The movie works best when focused on the re-emerging humanity of its core characters. The abstract art direction works well for this; a col...

4.5 is a stretch but a nice little flick, if not a bit over-narrated and over-scored.

Almost kinda smart and then Tony Scott just can't help himself and shoe-horns a dozen or so explosions into the last six minutes. Charming as hell!

A ★★★★½ review of A History of Violence (2005)
A History of Violence is a film that feels, at first, too brief. "That's it?" was my initial reaction on first watch, only to have it swirl in my brain for days, maybe weeks. That was about 13 years a...

📼MADE A MOVIE THING📼

Rough but a sneak peak... Just launched the v. early version of something I've been working on with a friend called FlicRec📼

Basically it's a way to recommend movies to friends and set a deadline so that they'll actually watch the damn thing!

Right now, it's pretty simple...

Sorry, but Laura Dern walking towards a camera kinda weirdly lit looking like this in Inland Empire is 100x scarier and masterful than whatever maximalist stuff Lily/Eggbert were doing:

We're past the bit of "loving Heat is only for basic dudebros" right?

Because man does this thing rip and flow infinitely beyond the genre.

100% keen to jam with any friendly weirdos for like 45 minutes at least on this thing; @letterboxd.social comments don't quite cut it!

A ★★★★★ review of Heat (1995)
Articulate, propulsive, tender, and sublime. The world is cold but there is warmth to be found — a cup of coffee, a smile in the sun, a coded gesture, a held hand. Heat captures the feeling of time ru...

Genuine question:

What percentage of movies/shows/albums/etc recommended to you do you ACTUALLY follow through with?

For me, probably 5-10%

This is an important question.

I recommend a movie based on your Top 4, you recommend one back to me based on mine. We both have a week to watch and review UNDER PENALTY OF SHAME!

Couldn't remember any goals I set in 2024 so we built a Goals/Projects feature to help:

a) Capture + make Goals/Projects REAL
b) Suggest tasks to get started
c) Set automated tasks so you can make daily/weekly/etc progress

It's live + free in beta: opper.dev

Disagreement is a wildly overlooked decision making tool

We built Auto-Rank to save time when adding to-dos

But I've been using it to force reflection + disagreement on tasks based on auto-rankings. Helpful!

Big value add for finding alignment on/across teams?

This has aged magnificently.

In a 2ish year span, my 11-13 year old self saw this, Mulholland Drive, and (obviously) The Matrix.

For whatever reason each of them hit HARD, and I strongly believe rewired my brain.

Also where'd Spike Jonze get to anyway?
