Happy World Walrus Day! The English word walrus probably comes from Dutch and means “whale horse.” The Albanian name for a walrus, lopë deti, means “sea cow.” And the Navajo word for a walrus is tábąąstííntsoh bideeʼ hólónígíí. It means “big otter that lies on the shore, with tusks”

ELMET (the play!) will be opening in Bradford tomorrow. Catherine Love has written about the process of bringing it to the stage.

‘Epic with a capital E’: inside Elmet, a tale of violence and greed on haunted Yorkshire heath
Elmet, a novel that was shortlisted for the Booker, is a lyrical, richly written tale of a woodland family on a collision course with an avaricious landowner. Can it work on stage in Bradford?

Whether you’re a fan of Hallowe’en or not, you have to give it credit for being the last line of defence against Christmas advancing even earlier into the year, a ragtag gang of goths holding the line against a battalion of baubled barbarians

I think we should have more names for someone with an overinflated sense of their own importance in English. These are my top five suggestions...

5. Poseidon of the paddling pool
4. Samurai of the butter knives
3. Hannibal of the lectern
2. Lord of the ring binder
1. Wolfgang Amadeus Flowchart
A term for someone with an overinflated sense of their own importance in Argentinian slang is Tarzan de maceta. It means “Tarzan of the flowerpot.”

Peter Sellers — the superstar all comic actors aspire to but none want to be
A hundred years after his birth, have successors such as Robin Williams, Steve Coogan or Sacha Baron Cohen come close to matching him?
