Trump sanctioned Russian oil last week.

But after this first big blow, Trump will have to take it slow--or risk letting sanctions undermine his broader agenda and his position at home.

22. The days of oil are over. Oil extraction is now becoming so expensive that oil prices would need to be above $80 per barrel for US shale extraction to be profitable. Meanwhile solar PV costs less than an equivalent of $20 per barrel oil.

Oil’s chances have gone up in smoke. Literally.
In March 2024 I wrote this.

"The reality is it will now get harder to make money in the U.S. shale oil industry. There is plenty of oil left in the shale plays of America, it’s just going to cost significantly more to extract than can be justified with $80 a barrel oil. "

The academic’s mid-summer crisis is a mid-life crisis in miniature:

You realize summer is half gone, & not only that: you see that the longest & least burdened days came early, & they are well past. You compare all you thought you’d do against the days remaining & grieve for what never will be

We don’t have to let Trump wreck our economy with tariffs—that’s a choice.

The Constitution gives trade authority to Congress, not the President.

Congress delegated tariff powers to the President and we can take them back.

We have the bills (one is mine). We just need enough support to pass them.

the way to do what I think you're trying to do is: "I understand why many people who care about the health of their families and communities have been drawn in by RFK's words. But his words are empty while his actions are making people sicker and less safe. Those actions will kill people."
RFK Jr. is not wrong. We are failing to keep our communities healthy. This message resonates with many.

But I have serious concerns about his ability and expertise to lead such a sweeping overhaul of the HHS workforce. We need accountability, not just rhetoric.

I don't care what side of the Israel-Palestine conflict your sympathies lie on, snatching up people with a valid student visa for the crime of writing an OpEd is naked fascism and if you don't oppose this you are a threat to this country's most basic values
Video of the international student at Tufts being arrested by "federal authorities" in Massachusetts has been released and it's terrifying.

They're not even uniformed officers. Just secret police thugs in hoodies and masks.

After today's grotesque and shameful display it is more evident than ever that the US needs a shadow government. We need people who can respond to this foolishness on a daily basis and who can serve as a dignified and thoughtful foil to the clown show currently in the White House.

A fabulous thread by Ewan. I highly recommend giving it a read.
This year, 2025, marks a major milestone in British industrial, energy and environmental history. Fifty years ago, oil began flowing from platforms in the North Sea. Half a century of petroleum production have had profound consequences for our economy, society and politics.
