I remember watching an interview with a computer scientist the day the first computer virus hit the fledgling Internet. He had tears in his eyes. He couldn’t imagine someone using the Internet for malicious purposes. I remember marveling at his naivety.
Generative AI doesn't look like a glowing orb.
AI looks like a Terawulf data center of Cayuga Lake that will serve Terawulf's client G42, which helps the government of the UAE spy on and torture its citizens.

What Generative AI Actually Looks Like
One of the few stable characteristics of generative AI technology is that it feels inevitable. "AI is the future," people say, "so you better get on board with it, or you'll get left behind.

Jeff Bezos says of generative AI: "This is real."

When tech tycoons have to begin defending the very idea that a technology is even real, it's a sign of something unreal going on.

Generative artificial intelligence is an intellectual cholesterol, clogging the channels of human thinking and communication.

Large language models don't save time. They waste time.
This is maybe the worst part about being an educator in the AI era.

AI companies are *stealing your time* by making you work around it/find it/adjudicate it. Time that, 4 years ago, you would have used to improve your materials, or stay up-to-date on some area of research.
“Educators now spend a significant amount of their time detecting AI-generated work and seeking ways to assess whether students are developing essential skills.”

Yes. Everywhere.

When the ICE gulag is built, the personnel hired and trained, and the machinery for deportations and detentions fine tuned, there’s little possibility of it being dismantled after reaching their targets, not if Trump and his ilk are running things. This is a set up for a police state.

65% budget DHS increase, an extra $42.3 billion:

> ICE to have more prison camp funds than Bureau of Prisons
> ICE to have more officers than the entire FBI
> $42,000 bonus for ICE employees
> Tripling of detention targets to 3,000 a day, 1 million a year

At the expense of everything else

Worth posting again.

It is one thing to read and hear about people being kidnapped, far different to actually see it.

These images must be seen, must be shared.

There are only three political positions in America today

1) I like the fascism

2) I'll acquiesce to the fascism (reasons for this one vary: cowardice, access, denial, misguidedly thinking that acquiescence is savvy, etc)

3) I oppose the fascism

The rest is details

The GEO Group & CoreCivic are expanding the number & capacity of their facilities, but that's not enough for Stephen Miller. On May 17, ICE initiated contracts with these 25 companies to provide “emergency detention & related services.”

It's unnerving how so many heavy users of generative AI don't grasp why it bothers people when they spew computer-generated text instead of speaking in their own voices.

Most people like other people.

Most people want conversations with people, not bots.

Do you hate the sound of your own voice?
