my favorite past time is chatting up people at the bar and connecting based in how cool bees are and really engaging them in how smart they are

we scientists must not forget that we fundamentally serve the public. it is our responsibility to engage the public and show them how cool science is

Had the pleasure of taking part of MPM's (@mkepublicmuseum.bsky.social) Inside out event tonight! Interacting with my community and sharing our cool bee science lights a fire underneath me. These interactions are why I do the science I do. To see the awe and wonder on people's faces.

I am a peer mentor in an undergrad-serving program that helps get them into research labs, get research experience, and go to graduate school. These are students who genuinely want to make the world better and are the future of our society's health abd function.

Program was terminated yesterday.

I wish there was a way to quantify the collective amount of work lost due to stress and despair over the last few weeks, independent of barriers to funding.

I organized a "call your congressman" session today amongst my fellow graduate students to urge our representatives to fight against the cutting of research funds. It made me feel better to talk to offices.

I will not be silenced by a calculated attack to destroy science in this country.

6/8. In science, and in institutions of learning like colleges and universities, there is a shared understanding that edicts should not go unquestioned—that we all have a duty to systematically investigate the world around us and to interrogate claims about it. We do not simply obey.

8/8. So, if you’re feeling down about these attacks, I understand—I feel that way too. But just remember that they’re not attacking because your work doesn’t matter; they’re attacking *precisely* because it does. So, get some rest, connect with your people, and keep doing it.

I get the instinct to say "it's too late" in response to calls to action (call your reps about thing x, show up to protest thing y). I do. But here's the thing. These are the last tools we have to preserve democracy, short of some very messy options that I refuse to romanticize. Too early to quit.

in these terrifying and uncertain times, I find solace when I look at my plants, my cats.

despite it all, my plants still will grow. my cats will still demand to be fed and then offer purrs and cuddles. life will find a way. and im hanging on to the idea that we will find a way.

I think some people hear “grants” and think that without them, scientists and government workers just have less stuff to play with at work. But grants fund salaries for students, academics, researchers, and people who work in all areas of public service.

“Pausing” grants means people don’t eat.
White House pauses all federal grants, sparking confusion
The Trump administration has put a hold on all federal financial grants and loans, affecting tens of billions of dollars in payments.
