They fly now?!

Several squids in the family Ommastrephidae are known as flying squids. They use their siphons to propel themselves out of the water like a squid rocket, then they glide through the air.

A Ommastrephes cylindraceus flying over the surface of the ocean. The squid has a blue mantle and head with light blue eyes. It has off white fins, arms and webbing which are spread out to help them glide. A large squad of Webbed Flying Squid (Ommastrephes caroli) launching out of the ocean. Nautiluses, the other group of surviving cephalopods, could not be more different from their coleoid cousins.

They have their iconic external shells, but they also have 50+ cirri instead of 8-10 limbs and pinhole eyes. They also can live over 20 years, much longer than any other cephalopod.
Two Palau Nautiluses (Nautilus belauensi) floating in the ocean, face to face. They both have white spiral shells with brown stripes, a triangle shaped hood above its head that has a brown area with white spots, and many small appendages called cirri. Their eyes are simple pinhole type eye that a small circular opening with a vertical slit below it. Chambered nautilus (Nautilus pompilius) (left) swimming next to a Fuzzy nautilus (Allonautilus scrobiculatus) (right). The chambered nautilus has a white spiral shell with orange stripes at the top, a triangle shaped hood above its head that has a brown area with white spots, and many small appendages called cirri. Its eye is simple pinhole type eye that a small circular opening with a vertical slit below it. The fuzzy nautilus looks very similar to the chambered nautilus, except the hood is smaller and curved downward, and its shell is mostly covered in a yellow fuzz called a periostracum. A Bellybutton Nautilus (Nautilus macromphalus) floating just above the sandy seabed at night. They are illuminated by a diver's light. A pair of Chambered nautiluses (Nautilus pompilius) feeding on two-spot red snapper (Lutjanus bohar) bait during daytime at 703 m (2,306 ft) depth. One is gripping the fish with its cirri while the other floats nearby.

New hope for the Wood White in Wales! 🎉

One of the rarest butterflies in the UK appears to be recolonising Wales decades after the last population died out.

It has been recorded at four sites in Powys this summer - including a female laying eggs.

Got another visit from the amazing twig-moth that is the pale prominent! 😁
Again I bring to you the most magnificent piece of twig. No, wait! It's a pale prominent moth again, my bad. Humour me though, because it's the best lil moth pal. Plus it's an easy mistake to make, and I will continue to make that joke, because this long, thin, irregularly shaped moth looks exactly like a broken bit of dried plant stem or twig. In both colour and shape I can imagine it fooling many an eagle eyed bird, lizard, or other predator. Or a human out looking for moths because I had to go get my good specs to fully appreciate it's magical-ness. Truly an utterfuckingly splendid disguise. The same twig mimicking moth, sitting on a grey cardboard egg tray from my moth trap. The point here is that you don't have to go very far away for it to just look completely like a twig. Majestic camouflage, truly. A top down view of the same twig mimicking moth. It seems somehow even more twiggy from this angle, so long and thin, with a mottled colour scheme that looks just like a bit of dried stem. Just amazing.
