PERSON OF THE DAY. 4 February 1983. Karen Carpenter died (aged 32), from heartbeat irregularities, brought on by Anorexia Nervosa. She was part of the sibling pop duo Carpenters along with her brother Richard. She’s regarded as one of pop’s greatest vocalists.

FACT OF THE DAY. 20 November 1970. The 10 shilling note (“Ten Bob Note”), was withdrawn by the Bank of England. The 10-shilling note was the smallest denomination note ever issued by the Bank of England. It was issued for the first time in 1928. It was removed in favour of the 50 pence coin.

On 1 August 1944, she joined the Warsaw Uprising as a nurse. Her unit operated in Old Town.

She was killed during the heavy bombing of the law courts. Warsaw was a city of graves. People were buried in green spaces and courtyards, even in the middle of the street.

A popular children's Christmas present, sold in Nazi Germany during WW2, was a board game called “Bomber over England”. Points were awarded for each place bombed. There were 100 points for hitting London, and 40 for Liverpool.
