M Gessen is right that too much criticism of Israel is labeled as anti-semitism; that the word intifada, like the word jihad, can have a variety of connotations, not all of them violent, and that that Zohran Mamdani is not an enemy of Jews.

I don't know what's really going on in Iran, or what the wisest approach would be or would have been. What I know is that two leaders whose wisdom, integrity, strategic thinking and general virtue I trust *least* are cheerleading the attack.

And maybe it's just me, but if I were the head of a self-styled "civil rights organization" like the ADL, I'd be more worried about members of the majority party chanting "Mass deportations now!" than about some disaffected 20-somethings chanting "Globalize the Intifada."

Hey, @asklyft.bsky.social . I ordered a #Lyft ride on Sunday. The driver never came, but the app showed the ride was completed and I was charged! There was no way to let you know that he never came. When I tried to dispute this through the site, it said that it found nothing wrong.

I don't really care what the "political consequences" are of fighting for the proposition that *everyone* is entitled to due process before they are removed from the United States and sent to a Salvadoran prison.
It's not really a principle if you only adhere to it when it's politically expedient.
