New MMI piece: We look at the 3.5 million people in Canada who live in a home that is too small to meet their needs, and how a mismanaged push by governments and urban planners towards densification is at odds with the human right to housing.

🇨🇦 can we do this poll here?
I’m now very curious.
📕 With the Booker Prize winner set to be announced tonight, how does voting intention vary by favourite book genre. Reform’s highest score is with fans of horror, while Labour enjoys a landslide lead among fans of self-help books. *Read* into that what you will.

We have a 100+ year old book that is a photographic history of WWI. Students are mesmerized by it.
How did they take the photos?
Could they zoom?
Is that a cannon?
Are those *real* dead people?
Why isn’t anything in colour?
Look at the moustaches!!!
We read the captions & learn together.

Being a terminally nonsportsball person, I had to ask a group of kids today to clarify what the #Bluejays player’s name was that I kept hearing.

Me: His name *isn’t* Boba Fett, right?

There are lots of things in education world that seem to be up for discussion. Those that get traction usually astonish me because they are by no means universal, but the people experiencing them think that they are.

This. Whole. Thread. 🧵
A striking thing about articles I’ve read claiming to “study the effects” of generative AI on student writing skills and consumption of information is that (1) they nearly always find the effects are negative and (2) most “conclusions” are still written assuming that we must use AI, for some reason.

Watch the Jane Goodall doc.
Just watch it.
Whole-hearted recommendation from me.

Am I watching the #LilithFair doc?
Yes.
Am I crying?
Also yes.

I enjoyed a bagel so delectably fine on Friday that I haven’t stopped thinking about it. Lamentably, the bakery is closed on Mondays.
But Tuesday before work I am grabbing a half dozen.

Today at recess a gr7 student said to me:
“6 7 am I right?”
Me: I would love for you to write me a 67 word paper in 6-7 minutes explaining whether or not you are. Thanks for volunteering! 😁

I was absolutely certain that baby would be a [redacted] and now despite 25 years+ of notes on time travel and family genealogies I am without a theory as to who that baby is. Had it been a [redacted] I would have plenty—and good ones! But now 🤷🏼‍♀️ #OutlanderBOMB

this is anti-religion and anti-faith and it makes my blood boil.

I had to read The Hobbit in high school and this was precisely why I couldn’t get into Tolkien as a whole.
Look—there’s lots to enjoy about “classics” if you organically find them. But we aren’t conditioned anymore to walk into a bookshop/library and just BROWSE.
As usual, I must point out that I tossed the LOTR books out a window when I was 11 because there were no girls in them. 😂

I was fortunate to have found women writing books that saw me, but few of those end up on the "classics" lists.

"Classics" tend to see one type of person only. 🤷🏻‍♀️
Yes I would but that's because I happen to think the Ring novels are a real slog. They bored me as a kid and are, charitably, not my cup of tea as an adult. I vastly prefer the movies, which I think work better as vehicles for the story. This is, I acknowledge, a controversial stance.

I started off by reading books I found in bookstores that sounded cool. Why would you ever want to do anything different? It's not sci-fi class. It's just reading. Read books. Any books. Literally any book you want to read. What a wild idea.

If I have to explain to you why it's a bad idea to use a machine that makes shit up 15-80% of the time AND destroys the environment AND contributes to rising fascism and genocide AND puts brilliant skillful creatives out of work by stealing their work, then we're already speaking different languages

We all know we shouldn’t judge books by their covers, however, I personally do not like or respond with engagement to current book cover trends. Browsing library Libby shelves and just turned off by all of the pastel-melon cartoons and black-cover florals with stark shimmery 3-wore fonts.

The focus on "AI Literacy" is particularly baffling, because guess what: it's just literacy! You can't use LLMs reliably unless you know what you're talking about. And the best way to actually learn something is to—you guess it—do your own work instead of having Chat-GPT do it for you.
