A Sharon Begley byline, almost 5 years after her death.

Upon hearing the news James Watson had died, a STAT reporter said in our Slack, "I wish I could read what Sharon would have written."

Incredible news: Sharon in fact did pre-write a Watson obit. And it is masterful and excoriating.

This is good advice. In Mass., www.gbfb.org supports 600+ food pantries, community meal programs and other hunger-relief orgs. If you can, donate cash, not cans. Just as valuable -- donate time. Food banks will need a lot of new volunteers to help with distribution.
as we reach the SNAP cliff just a gentle reminder to do-gooders that the most efficient use of resources is to contribute to organizations that are already established. unless nothing exists in your area (and it likely does whether you know it) now is probably not the time to stand something up

Smart move by two young upstate NY reporters: they filed a FOIA for body cameras worn by the sheriff’s deputies at an ICE raid. These are almost always civil raids so there’s no ongoing criminal investigation that would require that footage to stay confidential. Replicable by any media outlet.

One time I was new to Boston, left my book on my subway seat, asked a T worker on the platform if there was a lost & found, he radioed my train, a T guy found the book, handed it off to a train going the opposite direction and I had it back in like 3 min. (I too have trouble believing this story.)

Thanks for making us all watch The Turnaround, Ryan. I’m not a big baseball fan and never would have clicked on this otherwise. Beautiful, honest little movie about unconditional love, with more authenticity, depth and unlikely twists in 20 minutes than most feature films.
If you’re not into sports: it is not even really about sports.

Watch it! Trust me.

This is a wonderful thread, especially for #newspapersky #journalismsky
This website encourages niche interests, so I’m going to do a thread on a particular passion of mine: journalism history books. Starting with the greatest book ever written about a newspaper: “The Paper: The Life and Death of the New York Herald Tribune” by Richard Kluger.

Such good news. There’s an amazing back story about the scientist who worked on this relentlessly for 40 years — a couple of cool profiles of her below. Ronnie Levin is a true American hero.

Peter Dickinson’s James Pibble. So smart. So decent. So brave. So quietly Britishly feckless and sad.

OTOH if I were murdered I’d want DCI Jane Tennison on the case.
a dialogue I would like to start on this platform is Favorite Fictional Detectives

I grew up in a Poirot household but fell deeply in love with Albert Campion at a formative young age and I am also forever proselytizing to anyone who will listen about the Richard Jury books by Martha Grimes

I am very calm in a crisis. Patient with impatient people. Optimistic even when it’s unwarranted.
What skills/assets are you bringing to the post-apocalyptic commune/bunker/nomadic survival crew?

I am a classically trained chef, baker, cheesemaker, homebrewer (wine, cider, mead, beer and skilled at distilling spirits), musician (drums, guitar, bass, uke), and traditional archer.
