To me, the most important thing is to find a group of fellow film school people that you get along with and mesh with creatively. In an industry as obscenely transactional as Hollywood, you need REAL friends. Not just as collaborators but as emotional support. My true friends in LA are my life raft.
@conanthecontrarian.bsky.social Hi, Mr. Whannell! Matt here. What tips do you have for filmmakers trying to make connections in the industry i.e. agents, collaborators, mentors? I see a lot of creatives out of film school struggling with networking or breaking in.

Hi, @conanthecontrarian.bsky.social I’m a writer/director emulating your career trajectory. I’m just appeared on national television, but I’m not sure on the next step. What should I do now?

The Tomatometer does not mark how good a movie is.

It marks what percentage of critics “liked” it.

A mediocre movie, where everyone sorta liked it, and a polarising movie, where people loved or hated it, both come out at 50%, looking mediocre.

Watch polarising films. You will love half of them.

You emulate your favourite writer’s story structure and prose.

I emulate my favourite writer’s anxiety headaches.

We are not the same.

Tip #2 from a One-Time (So Far) Film Director:

Listen to everyone.

You’ll be solving hundreds of problems a day, and it’s very unlikely you’ll have the best answer for every question. If someone has a better idea than you, use it. You have a team for a reason.

Tip from a One-Time (So Far) Film Director:

Learn every single way to communicate.

It doesn’t matter how good your ideas are. If you can’t communicate them, they’re not happening. Language, pictures, references, acting it out, pre-vis, hand gestures. Whatever it takes.

Communicate. Everything.

I have one script.

I’ve been working on it for seven years, and I know it’ll be a smash, and I will make it into a film someday.

In 1 year,
In 5 years,
In 50 years,
I will do it.

However long it takes.

I am patient. I am stubborn. I will not be stopped.

Just got cooked like a mixed grill. Coming after whoever popped a hole in my favourite ozone layer.

Solid gold skeet. Delightful.
My relationship with Big wasn’t the only thing I blew up that day. At the Trinity test site I detonated the first plutonium bomb, unleashing a 22 kiloton blast. Had I become Death, destroyer of worlds? Meanwhile uptown, Samantha had her hands full with her own “Manhattan project”

I’d like to issue a retraction on one specific detail of this post (tweet?). 1/3
I’m nervous.

I’ve been here thirty six minutes and people I’ve never met are liking my tweet (post?) and following me. I feel like I’m in a spy thriller, confronting by mysterious coat-clad fedora folks tailing me through downtown. WHO DO YOU WORK FOR?!

Comedy aside, welcome to my Bluesky. 1/2
