I found my name on this list for a couple of academic articles and filled out the form. If you have every published ANYTHING, check and see if your name is there!
Just a reminder to check for your name in this list of books that OpenAI trained from. If your name is there, they probably owe you several thousand dollars.

OpenAI cried that if everyone eligible author files, the company will go bankrupt, so I'm alerting every author I have ever spoken to.

Last fall Portland, OR held its first city council election using single transferable vote (STV) (aka "proportional RCV"). Moon Duchin, David McCune and I did a post-mortem analysis of the election, and the tl;dr version is that STV worked very well!

Fantastic research (as usual!) from the Data and Democracy Lab (formerly the Metric Geometry and Gerrymandering Group Lab) on the potential impact of switching to proportional representation for electing legislative bodies.
Proportional representation (including party-list) improves racial and ethnic representation.
Single-winner systems (including RCV) do nothing to improve racial and ethnic representation.

Dean has been my friend since we met at nerd camp at age 13. He is an incredible human being who has devoted his entire life and career to alleviating world poverty, and he's damn good at it. Since 2022 he has been the chief economist at USAID - until yesterday.

Why Dean Karlan, chief economist of USAID, resigned on Tuesday
He was hired in 2022 so the aid agency could get 'more bang for our buck' with its projects. He tried to reach out to help in the rebuilding of the agency. On Tuesday he tendered his resignation.

Fantastic thread on how indirect costs work at U.S. universities, to put the devastation of NIH's slashing them to 15% across the board in perspective.
I have a piece half-done on the entire world of indirect costs. It's too big an endeavor to finish now, in the middle of the night, when this problem *that was always a live grenade with a half-pulled pin* is suddenly a topic du jour. Shit of a thing.

Here are some highlights.
