"The Great VAT Panic"

The claims made by the right-wing press about VAT on private school fees were wildly wrong.

Why? What are the lessons about about (how not to) run a lobbying campaign? And what can government learn?

Abortion is criminalised and stigmatised – and now the right has found a new female scapegoat in its US-style war on bodily autonomy, says Guardian Europe columnist Fatma Aydemir

Ahead of the expected proscription of Palestine Action - the first time a protest group has been legally redefined as terrorist - I went through the Hansard of the 2000 Act they're being banned under. Turns out MPs were assured the law wouldn't be applied this way. Thread 🧵🔽

You know you've been conditioned to live in a black & white paradigm when you have no ability to distinguish between

-Marxism
-Communism
-Socialism
-Democratic Socialism

If all those words scream in your brain BAD, but you can't describe their differences, you've been conditioned to feel this way

With thanks to @umland.bsky.social for marshalling the 50-plus UK-based or UK-educated scholars of Russia who co-signed, all of whom work from a more reality-based understanding of the country and the threat it poses to Europe.

On 13 June, @theguardian.com published a collective letter concerning Russia’s war & attacking Dr #FionaHill, the chancellor of Durham University & one of the principal authors of the UK’s strategic defence review. As UK-based or British-educated experts in matters pertaining to Russia, we disagree.
There is only one warmonger on the European stage: Vladimir Putin | Letter
Letter: Experts on Russia, Ukraine and international security respond to a letter that criticised Fiona Hill for her assessment of the Russian threat to Britain

This feels valid for the UK.
The basic fallacy in chasing votes by being "tough on immigration" is that the modal American's position on the issue is "Deport the Bad ones and keep the Good ones," and they alone know who is which, and that simply does not translate into workable policy. So this kind of gestapo stuff (1/2)

In the same 24 hour period Russia broke its own record by blindly hurling 472 Shahed drones at Ukrainian cities for no tactical purpose beyond terror and pain, and Ukraine executed a carefully planned infiltration strike decimating Russian strategic aviation.

Draw your own conclusions.

They talk about a trend towards much tighter correlation between types of prejudice and between conservatism and general prejudice, but I wonder if it's just that the bigots feel more at liberty to say what they've thought all along because of the Spray Tan Troll.

There are still, for now, moments of humour in this, but it’s very serious shit.
US representatives have been going around in Greenland's capital, Nuuk, knocking on one door after another to ask if they would like to be visited by the vice president's wife. -Everywhere the answer was the same: "No, thank you". According to Danish TV 2's correspondent in Nuuk, Jesper Steinmetz.

Can we take a sec to talk about how their excuses are worse than the truth?

Waltz claims a normal, non-spy citizen was able to sneak or trick his way, undetected, INTO A CLASSIFIED CONVO between the directors of the CIA, NSA, VP, & DOD planning air strikes.

&... this is intended to exonerate them?

We are sending people for indefinite detention without trial at a foreign gulag because they have tattoos about soccer teams and about loving their mothers.
I want you to understand this is happening in our name and we know most of these men committed no crimes. One is a professional soccer player who was tortured in Venezuela and was working through asylum in the U.S. ICE shipped him for his Real Madrid tattoo and a picture throwing rock & roll horns.

I thought the battle of cannae was what happens when you tell the weans to tidy their room.
Hannibal was hands down the greatest general of his time he had destroyed Carthage’s greatest enemy Rome - twice. He had during the battle of Cannae wiped out the Roman aristocracy crushing them.

However, after his military career he had been made a senator in Carthage.

I'm not a fan of the "If only people were better educated they'd stop voting for stupid shit" argument because educated people do this crap too, but I'd make an exception for the constant drilling in that either the rule of law applies to everyone or it applies to nobody. You cannot be safe alone.
"But I'm a citizen," you say. "This doesn't apply to me." It's a pretty short step from deporting lawful residents without due process to "show me your papers, you don't LOOK like a real American to ME" on the street.
Two high profile illegal detainment/deportment cases of *lawful residents* out of Logan Airport in Boston. This is a great thing to call your electeds about TODAY. ☎️ at reps.fyi
