not the main issue here but i'd really appreciate it if democratic politicians spoke out in support of big-city life and culture with the same energy and reverence that all politicians have for small towns

los angeles is "real america" and so are all the other big cities the president hates

This is awful. The whole thread is worth a read.
A “hoax.”

I have experienced a curious mix of feelings while having a significant portion of my life’s work in books and the art of my friends distorted and vandalized by post-literate fascists for the last few years. The feelings right now are uniquely awful.

Practice your “No, I’m not doing that” - it’s a lot harder than agression and/or scolding others. And it’s critical to all of us. If you’re safe/privileged the amount of someone’s time you can waste with “no, I’m not doing that” (or confused requests for clarification) is even more important

Finally, I'd like to post this poem by @clintsmithiii.bsky.social: When pople say "we've made it through worse before..."

"...we are not all left standing after the war has ended. Some of us have become ghosts by the time the dust has settled."

1/5. The way Trump, Trump Jr, Tuberville, and Hannity are talking now about Greenland, Mexico, Panama, and Canada plagiarizes Putin in 2013, before the first invasion of Ukraine.

Individual consumer choices cannot save the world, but for the sake of your soul, maybe delete ChatGPT. Not using AI is literally the least you can do.
Elon Musk: Why isn’t there enough water in California?

SoCal friends, I’m so sorry you’re dealing with this. A few things I wish I’d known as we evacuated ahead of a wildfire (that took our home in 2021) 🧵

The solution to the NRA buying politicians isn’t to stop the NRA itself, it’s to stop allowing ALL groups that at dark money groups from being able to buy politicians.

This is bigger than red v. blue, campaign finance is an issue within both major political parties.

I’m gonna need Democrats/liberals/progressives to stop making “suggestions” for Elon Musk and DOGE about where to really cut government waste.

DOGE isn’t about government waste at all. It’s about gutting the regulatory and welfare state.

Don’t be cute. Call it what it is: oligarchy in action.

Many folks ask why Biden isn't using his immunity to do something. That's because it's not "his" immunity. It's the Supreme Court's. The justices set it up in such a way that THEY decide on a case-by-case basis which president is immune for what act. 9/

I feel like a broken record, I say this so often. But YES YES YES YES THIS.
In the past day I’ve heard two people who really should know better say they asked ChatGPT for factual info.

ChatGPT is not a search engine. It is predictive text based on other people’s stolen writing; its whole job is to make stuff up. Please do not ask it for facts. Tell a friend.
Don’t know what to buy your loved ones for Christmas? Just ask ChatGPT

And the BLM protests. For like one year tops it seemed like we might take how women and Black people are treated seriously and the American antibodies kicked into high gear.
Feel like one could get pretty far in explaining the Trump restoration as a mass-psychological attempt to retcon the pandemic away and undo MeToo
News Analysis: Donald Trump will be the first court-adjudicated sexual abuser to become president. But if he gets the team of his choice, he will not be the only one in the room whose conduct has been called into question.

StoryGraph is so so good. You get graphs and charts AND can give quarter/half stars. And the monthly/yearly wrap ups are so cute.
Goodreads is owned by Jeff Bezos. A better alternative is StoryGraph, a Black woman-owned platform. And before y’all start, you can transfer all your Goodreads data to Storygraph so you literally have no excuse.

I highly recommend reading the audiobook. It’s poetry for the ear.
Grateful for the way this book continues to move through the world.

Also shout out to the energy of giving Christmas presents to yourself. I’m here for it.
Just finished reading How The Word Is Passed by @clintsmithiii.bsky.social. It was a Christmas gift to myself two years ago, and hearing him on @thebulwark.bsky.social podcast this past Independence Day caused me to move it to the top of my “to read” pile. Excellent and revealing. Highly recommend.

If Harris wins there will be an attempt to nullify the election and if the Democrats control the House in January it fails. If the Republicans control the House it succeeds since they also control SCOTUS. Don’t count on laws to save us. Saving us will require people doing what is right.
The key point in all this is that laws are not self-executing. They're carried out by people

And that means laws alone can never save you from autocracy

If you elect a majority Republican House, and a majority Republican Senate, and have a 6-3 R Supreme Court, elections can be nullified
