The destruction of the #EastWing is the worst US historical loss to a “planned” demolition since the #SingerBuilding. This did not go through regular channels and is not doing best practices for work on or near a historic building. Anyone telling you otherwise is ignorant or lying. #whitehouse

Never seems good when we see an uptick in web traffic to the primary source "Can a State Constitutionally Secede?" 🫠
Can a State Constitutionally Secede? – AHA
This is one of the questions of the day, and it appears to be no longer a mere abstract or theoretical question. The Constitution makes no provision for secession. A Government is not a corporation wh...

Stumbled upon this awesome blog post about corsets and stays. Also, indie authors will continue to write and publish historical romance, so don't worry.

Terminology: What's the difference between stays, jumps & a corset - The Dreamstress
I’ve already posted about the difference between swiss waists, waist cinchers, corsets & corselets.  This week, I’m going back in history, and back to basics, to discuss the differences between stays,...

As I mention frequently re #GameofThrones, folks like my student Savannah Shipman established that rape convictions were higher in 1300s England than U.S. today. Roman law forbade cat-calling women! If we represent the past as undiluted Misogynia, we implicitly excuse current law/norms as "Better."
So one of the things that is repeatedly showing up in response to this post is people saying things like “but don’t you realize history is misogynist” and look, there was a lot of misogyny in history, but there is even more misogyny in viewing history as a simple and easy monolith.
I’ve tried not to talk too much about Game of Thrones because people loved it and I don’t want to finger-wag, etc, but my problem with that series has always been its bone-deep misogyny.

Misogyny that ruined the show even for people who loved it!

In East Slavic old beliefs, snakes and birds are cult animals.

In fact, there is enough evidence to consider that a snake was seen as the totemic ancestor if not by all, than at least by some of the East Slavic peoples.

This is one of my favorite, low-tech, ways of visualizing the past! Doesn't oversell the reconstruction, shows possible past and present in same view, works, rain or shine and without power.
An interesting way to help people visualize what a ruin used to be.
