They're not clever enough for this.
Here's an extraordinarily cynical take: did the government talk up the likelihood of a manifesto-breaking income tax rise in the knowledge that it would push down gilt yields in the window the OBR will use for its forecasts? Rowing back now pushes up yields but too late to enter the forecast on 26th
And there we go 10y opened up 11 basis points erasing 1/3 of the rally since October.

I feel like you could literally hand them a big instruction book with "how to fix everything and win the next election" on it in big writing, and they'd use it as a doorstop but also keep tripping over it.

There's a story doing the rounds on SM about Sweden apparently switching to an edible rock salt formula it uses for gritting roads, as this is less harmful for birds. It comes with a pretty picture too obvs. But I think it's just made up?

She could have said this after her first day as Chancellor though? What a waste of their first year.
The chancellor also gave the clearest indication yet that she plans to raise income tax despite the likely political backlash.

“It would of course be possible to stick with the manifesto commitments, but that would require things like deep cuts in capital spending," she said.

The fact that the BBC has made serious culpable errors does not negate the point that there is a real and concerted right-wing media campaign to destroy it. Both points can be true at the same time and the campaign would not end even if the errors did.

I think banning it would be bad, because:
1. It would backfire domestically
2. It would backfire HUGELY internationally
3. Democratic governments shouldn’t ban social platforms.

BUT: they really, *really* should stop using it.
genuinely hard to think of another single move the UK govt could do that would do as much good as banning twitter. it's the poison at the root of so much ill

See I don't think this is right. Of course everyone at various points takes issue with specific BBC News output, as Alan says, and I'd guess this has always been true. But that doesn't mean all those also people want BBC News to be diminished or shut down.
As far as the political class is concerned, the BBC has always been Batman at the end of the Dark Knight. “We’ll hunt him. Because he can take it.”

Everyone thinks it’s biased according to their prejudices. Every government can show they’re intervening to fix this. And that works for all.

Yep - it's a culture war but only one side is fighting it (as I've said before).
Maybe Keir should demand the heads of major US news networks any time they imply Britain is on the brink of civil war or that we live under sharia law. Or does it not work both ways?
