Today 170 people turned out to protest on the sidewalk in front of the Walmart on Elmira Street in Sayre, PA, one of the reddest of small towns in Bradford County. I'd say that passers-by were about 10 to 1 in favor of the protestors.

This is absolutely catastrophic for U.S. higher education, and for U.S. global leadership. Just the latest in a series of senseless acts of self-sabotage by a malevolent administration bent on making the United States weak and poor.
I know there's a lot happening today, but this is sneaking in under the radar. This proposed new rule would absolutely crush foreign PhD students, potentially making it impossible for them to enroll with any certainty of their ability to finish www.politico.com/news/2025/08...

Aye-yie-yie. In a more "woke" era, I was criticized in an anonymous student course evaluation for using a racial slur. I had suggested to my writing students that they have a look at James Baldwin's "I am not your Negro," which happens to be the title of the film.
Brown U's agreement with gov't includes the following:
"Student course evaluations that are collected on an anonymous basis at the end of each semester will be regularly reviewed to identify any reports of antisemitism, which will be promptly referred to OECR for appropriate action."

True in the US as well.
I really think universities underestimate how true this is for a lot of students and their parents. They don’t want us to try to pretend to be cool. They want us to be a bit dusty, and very serious. Enthusiastic, definitely! But also nerdy. We’re selling them ACADEMIA.
The kids aren't stupid. They either want to come to uni because they want to study. Or because they think it leads to a job. They also know it's going to cost them money AND time.
They want a uni brand/site to FEEL like a university. They expect it to be a bit old school. Not a game. Not a company.

There will be two separate columns in the spreadsheet. Race and Color.
What are the possible entries in the color column?
Race = Asian, color = ???
What about Hispanic and Latino students? Jewish students? What is the entry in the color column? Does the student decide? Columbia? Vance?

Pause to consider what this means: The Trump administration will audit admissions data by race, color, and test score.
RACE AND COLOR. COLOR. That’s exactly what Columbia agreed to do.
When’s the last time that someone asked you what color you are? Are you sure the Trump admin agrees with you?

Columbia University has handed over its undergraduate admissions process to Donald Trump and his MAGA allies, who will now decide at their sole discretion whether the university has admitted enough white people. It's no longer an independent institution.

Probably true, although no one in this administration seems to have an especially good grasp on the rules of grammar -- let alone when it's appropriate to use quotation marks.

Dear Facebook, please stop showing me posts about Biden's decline. He's off the stage now -- who even cares? Instead, it might be useful to circulate a few more stories about the current WH occupant's lack of understanding not only of the US Constitution, but also of the oath he took to uphold it.

Has anyone found a good substitute for Skype? I used it mostly to call companies and people who are not on WhatsApp. An added bonus was that I could make it appear that I was calling from my own phone number. I have tried using CallCentric and I can't get it to work. Many thanks!

Dozens of schools, including the University of California and Harvard, said the Trump administration ended the visas of their students in recent days. For many, the reasons are unclear.

I have friends in the US on green cards who would have loved to be out protesting today, but they were were afraid. This speaks volumes about how bad things are right now. They have the same rights as US citizens to "peaceably assemble and petition the government for a redress of grievances."
