I’m an IP barrister and an academic. Intellectual property, technology, privacy law is my thing. And gardening, orchids and choral music. Brexit was and is an economic catastrophe for the United Kingdom. Rejoin Now. I voted Yes to the Voice.
It’s Australia Day, 26th January 2025 - the date the colony of New South Wales was proclaimed by Captain Arthur Philip for England. It is rightly called Invasion Day by Indigenous people in Australia - the start of colonisation.
Every year there are calls to change the date of Australia Day(1)

It’s one of those basic needs - a safe place to lay your head at night - and it should be a human right as well.
Back in June @kyleatink.bsky.social and I introduced a Bill that would make housing a human right. It had support from former Labor & Liberal politicians. Now the ACT Greens are getting on board.

Ensuring everyone has access to a safe, affordable home should be above politics.

So yesterday, we had some gardening done - and woke this little ringtail possum from its daytime nap. The little possum is fine and went back to bed afterwards. #australianwildlife #ringtailpossum

This is exactly what is involved in training multi-modal models used for generating images using generative AI. Pay the creatives a fair rate for the use of their images in training multi-modal models. Better still - pay the creatives a fair rate to create those original images for you.
At this point it’s been said in a hundred different ways, so I think people are being intentional about not getting it.

People are leaving Twitter because it’s not fun anymore and no one is obligated to be on a platform they don’t enjoy.

It’s not rocket science.

Not even winter yet but the Gritter trucks are already out spreading grit and salt on Scottish roads. And to tell them apart they have code names because numbers would be boring… www.traffic.gov.scot/gritter-trac...

I’ve been lecturing today at Manchester - special relativity - and for no good reason other than I want to post stuff here, here’s my lecture notes introducing the concept of invariant mass :-)

So I’ve been thinking what to make as my first post. Politics? Music? Dogs? Māori MPs’ haka to show their defiance against right wing idiots? My contempt for anti-vaxxers? I know - King Parrots!
