When I was an undergraduate in the early 70s, William Labov's Sociolinguistics switched on a lightbulb in my mind. Reading his obituary has brought back my admiration of his work and a wonderful set of memories.
A nice obituary in the Philadelphia Inquirer @inquirer.com about the celebrated linguist William Labov, father of sociolinguistics, who passed away on Dec. 17 at age 97.
