We study the stressors, natural and manmade, that influence the evolution of bee behavior. I'm a Professor of Biology in the Department of Ecology, Behavior, and Evolution at UC San Diego in the School of Biological Sciences
Congratulations to Hannah Griesmer for successfully defending her thesis on Nosema infections of honey bees and ways to activate natural bee defenses against this very widespread disease!

Congratulations to Gu Gaoying and our team on our new paper: even low levels of artificial light harm honey bees. Constant light raises mortality, impairs scent learning, and boosts stress-linked norepinephrine—showing how light pollution disrupts bee brain function.

Congratulations to @Bahram Kheradmand for publishing his paper on sequence learning in honey bees. It turns out that bees can figure out a very challenging task of learning that a visual pattern that was previously unrewarded will become rewarding on the next visit.

In 2003, I received my first major NSF grant to study stingless bee communication and its link to their role as neotropical pollinators. This led to insights into how warfare may have shaped their signaling. Thank you, federal funding! @ucsandiego.bsky.social

A teacher once asked why I didn’t want to be a doctor to cure diseases. While human health is vital, the wonder of nature in every child deserves exploration. Let’s celebrate researchers who inspire seekers and thank federal funding for supporting this vision.

With a CAREER grant from the National Science Foundation, I continued the Opportunities for Research in the Behavioral Sciences with San Diego Community Colleges and give 68 students research experiences in my lab. Funding also helped support the careers of new USA and Brazilian scientists.

Federally supported basic science in action: “Even Ozempic traces its roots back in part to work at the N.I.H. The toxin from Gila monster lizards seemed to have particular physiological effects, helping lead eventually to one of the world’s most profitable and promising drugs.”

We made 3d printed pollen feeders for our apiary. The bees love them and consume surprisingly large amounts.
