🧪 Detailed data viz NYT article, out today, on the extent of funding cuts at the National Science Foundation.

This "broken pie chart" is neat & new to me: Powerfully shows the slowdown in new NSF awards across areas.

A juvenile lionfish (Pterois volitans), a first for me in #BIOL139 in Belize. Still venomous and dangerous. We also had the opportunity to see an adult being eaten by a moray eel. The circle of life. #hofstrainbelize2025

Our time teaching #BIOL139 in Belize has come to an end. But here’s one of my favorite invertebrates in this place. I’ve gotten better at taking pictures of these guys in turbulent waters, but this one is my favorite. This is the flamingo tongue snail (Cyphoma gibbosum) on a sea fan coral.

Back to the water today for #hofstrainbelize2025, as we visit Hol Chan and Shark Ray Alley, where we saw this beautiful bridled burrfish, as well as Christmas tree worms, sleeping sharks and a spotted scorpionfish, among so many others. Follow us on @hofstrainbelize on instagram to see more!

#BIOL139 took a break from swimming through coral reefs to visit the Mayan ruins of Altun Ha and learn more about the history of this amazing place. #hofstrainbelize2025
