Slowly getting these fingers and hands back in working order. It’s been a large mountain to climb. I can improvise just fine, but replaying others’ works requires a different level of focus and physicality that had been somewhat jeopardized by psoriatic arthritis. I will beat this. I must. I am.

I am so proud of my students who did so well in a recital today, they played so musically. It was refreshing and inspiring. Bravissimo!

Adding a drum track to Schönberg works, makes the music more accessible. This is true, I did an experiment with a class where I played a track of rather avant-garde electronic sounds, they hated it. Few weeks later, same track with a drum track: they loved it. rcarl.substack.com/p/the-postmo...

At age 60, I decided to finally take the summers off as a teacher. We know teacher pay sucks. Several large expenses (Hamden property tax ripoff I’m looking at you) zeroed out my bank account! And, of course, September paychecks don’t come in till later. So learning how to navigate this, still. 🤦♂️⛈️😬

At age 60, I decided to finally take the summers off as a teacher. We know teacher pay sucks. Several large expenses (Hamden property tax ripoff I’m looking at you) zeroed out my bank account! And, of course, September paychecks don’t come in till later. So learning how to navigate this, still. 🤦♂️⛈️😬
Just finished teaching the first “Adult Advanced Piano Performance Class” of the fall semester, and it had a rousing start with Joplin’s Maple Leaf Rag, Bach D Major Partita, and Franck’s giant “Prélude, Chorale, and Fugue”. The performer was so into it, they were overwhelmed with emotion after! ❤️🥂

Gah, I get these annoying dreams right before each academic year starts (not nightmares, just stupid annoying dreams I awake from, saying “well THAT was stupid”). Obviously my brain is done with teaching, does not want to go back after summer. But, have to pay the bills till I’m dead. What a country
