🧬I attempted RNA isolation on some grass from outside the faculty and obtained two perfect 18S and 28S rRNA bands...

So, my 10 failed attempts on my own sample were due to improper lysis, after all... I'm happy to figure out it wasn't my dirty RNase-hands...😅

🌳 Check out these two happy faces! Kimon and Elijah finished their bachelor's theses last week! 🌿

It was a lot of fun to guide them in the process and to have them working on my project. All the best with the next step, guys! 🪴

🌞Went out with @alexluijten.bsky.social to get some biomimicry inspiration from the famous Strandbeesten by Theo Jansen.

Apparently the 'Strandbeesten mortuary' is right across the river from the @shapingmatterlab.bsky.social! 🤖🪁

🌳 A big shout-out to @bertderybel.bsky.social and the team at @psb-vib.bsky.social for organising the Vasculature Development Meeting, a satellite of #ICAR2025 in Ghent! 🌳

Added benefit of conferences in Belgium is that they have your favourite beer on stock... 🍺🌿

Anyone who has ever squirmed through a dental cleaning can tell you how sensitive teeth can be. This sensitivity gives important feedback about temperature, pressure—and yes, pain—as we bite and chew ...

🔬Always nice to help out a fellow scientist... I suspect that the tensile testing of some of Gonçalo's homemade TPU filament with Kimon will not end up in a figure...

I'm really happy my officemate @alexluijten.bsky.social will be around for some years to come at the @shapingmatterlab.bsky.social! 🚀

Please don't fill the office to the brim with lattice cells, Alex... 🤖
Last week, @alexluijten.bsky.social passed his go/no-go moment of his PhD! 🏆 This means we can expect more cool work in discrete lattice fabrication and more cool videos of robots doing stuff! 🤖

Had a great time with Jasper last week running the Building Blocks of Life workshop for #TUDelft Girls' Day 💥

The high school girls got to isolate their own DNA and even took it home in a little test tube. Hopefully, we sparked some curiosity for a future in #STEM 💡🧬

🌳How do trees ensure their branches are not blown off by the wind, and can we harness this for 3D-printed structures?

Caroline's paper explores how wavy fibre patterns inspired by trees can toughen 3D-printed materials.🪴

Thanks for saving the tree in front of my office window, guys!

It did get me wondering whether we could have made living rope-tree #composites. Time to write a grant @kmasania.bsky.social...?
