While monitoring storks over the years, we’ve noticed the alarming numbers of chicks entangled in ropes. In this paper, we quantified the impacts!
In our new paper led by Ursula Heize, we show that >90% of #WhiteStork nests have anthropogenic materials (plastics, paper, etc). Ropes are particularly dangerous: ~12% of the chicks became entangled on ropes, particularly on baler twine!

Storks are amazing birds. Tracking them for many years enabled us to find some cool stuff!

On the 27th of March, we welcomed our first #WhiteStork hatchlings! And one was still struggling to get out of the egg when we arrived!

We've been following #Barlavento for many years now. This winter, his GPS device stopped working in Senegal and we were unsure about his fate. It was a relief to find him well this week, ready to start another breeding season! Well done Barlavento!

We are working to revert the decline of the European Roller (Coracias garrulus) in Portugal, with 156 nest-boxes ready for the upcoming breeding season!
