It’s Thanksgiving eve, so must be time for #livebaking! Today’s treat is caramel apple bars, starting with three (3) sticks of butter.

I once asked a bookseller at a large indie store how many people would have to buy a book for it to get the attention of the store buyer and cause an additional order and they said: Three.
I see some book piracy discourse, and, to make a positive argument in favor of buying books, your marginal ability to influence what books get published and support the careers of writers you like is massive compared to most other forms of media.

I love it when little garbage cats develop the luxury of food snobbery. Yes he was tiny wet ball of fleas found in a ditch but now he's a velvet prince who wants the premium, organic, grain-free chicken in gravy, NOT the premium, organic, grain-free chicken au jus how dare you offer that garbage.

My “favorite” in this genre is the ad showing the infamous Coldplay kisscam photo with a tagline like “AI agents won’t get caught having an affair with HR.” As if CEOs are the people at risk of being replaced by LLMs….
Two perfectly normal ads in the perfectly normal city of San Francisco.

“It's both possible, and even necessary, to simultaneously enjoy media while also being critical of its more problematic or pernicious aspects" was such a simple message that was so thoroughly and viciously rejected, but i think many of you still need to learn it

hey man, i know you don't want to hear this, but:

if you want to "clean up" your parks you gotta get these people stable housing and income. for like 50% of homeless people a few thousand dollars worth of well-targeted resources is enough to get them "back on their feet."
"The longer visible signs of social decay are allowed to fester, the more inclined those with means will be to simply check out ... leaving those without the ability to relocate to deal with playgrounds littered with drug paraphernalia." www.theglobeandmail.com/opinion/arti...
Opinion: We have normalized delinquent, disorderly behaviour in our cities for too long

Weird how this works
EVERY
SINGLE
TIME
An Oregon pilot program giving cash to homeless youths sees a staggering reduction in homelessness. The program gave participants $1,000 cash payments each month for two years, and at the end of the project's first phase, 91% of participants reported being in stable housing.

This (and the nested thread, click through to see it) is exactly the kind of low-stakes drama I needed to see today.
Folks, I did it. I made the Cooks Illustrated competing pear crisps, and then I made my friends judge them blind.

“You can have a very low opinion of the electorate… and still think they’d vote against a pedophile…. This is how Democrat Doug Jones became a senator in Alabama—not because he talked about affordability, but because Roy Moore was a child predator.”
The usual suspects are telling Dems that Epstein won’t win elections, get back to “affordability” and I think my head might explode. www.offmessage.net/p/force-a-re...
Force A Referendum On The Epstein Coverup
It divides Republicans much more than "affordability" or any other economic issue.

"What if one of YOUR favorite politicians/celebrities/etc is on the list?" Did you all not notice how quickly we dropped Neil Gaiman when we found out about the things he did? Do you know how beloved that guy used to be and how loathed he is now? I think that right there should answer your question.

Today is a good day to remember, and to say, that the #MeToo movement was right, and was righteous, and has been vindicated over and over again. There was no overreach. There was no excess. There was no they-went-too-far.

So much work remains to be done.

Right, these are the two options: Either they tolerated Epstein's eugenics to get to the sex crimes or they tolerated his sex crimes to get to the eugenics
It seems like all of the rich and powerful people around him patronizingly tolerated the race science stuff (“he has such an inquisitive and childlike mind”) in order to get access to his harem of underage sex slaves
The Epstein stuff is always so amazing to me because it's like "yes he was a sex criminal but if you can get past that, he was also an avowed eugenicist"

In my old town the GOP had run basically without serious challenge for decades. A bunch of us "millennials" joined the local Dem party and basically asked to help.

We were running it in a year. Within 4 years we had a majority of town seats flipped Dem. A FAR more progressive Dem than old party
“Rather than taking over the Democratic Party the same way the right took over the Republican Party, we should take the easier route and just start up a new party ourselves!”

I’m about to fill my pockets with stones and walk into the sea.

score one for "the pundits are projecting their own preoccupations onto the electorate"
Earle-Sears ran what felt like 12 billion ads about how much she hated trans kids and I didn’t hear a single pundit say she should stick to real issues that affect real people.

This is one of the reasons why the NYC mayoral election was so important, even for those of us many states away.

If Zohran had lost, you can get they'd be pouring even more money into elections everywhere.

But he won, which will give the billionaire class pause.

The people have power, you all!

Good news, everybody. There's actually a *good* autopsy out this week that *doesn't* make all these dumb mistakes. It's got genuine, meaningful, actionable suggestions for how to do politics better:
