Agents with guns have chased a teacher into the school where she works. They did not have a warrant. They dragged her away, ignoring her and her colleagues’ pleas to show proof of her documentation. That evening I stand a few feet from the parents of Rayito de Sol and listen to them describe, with anguish, how good Ms. Diana was to their children. What it is like to have strangers with guns traumatize your kids. For a teacher to hide a three-year-old child for fear they might be killed. How their relatives will no longer leave the house. I hear the pain and fury in their voices, and I wonder who will be next. Understand what it is to pray in Chicago. On September 19th, Reverend David Black, lead pastor at First Presbyterian Church of Chicago, was praying outside the ICE detention center in Broadview when a DHS agent shot him in the head with pepper balls. Pepper balls are never supposed to be fired at the head because they can seriously injure, or even kill. “We could hear them laughing as they were shooting us from the roof,” Black recalled. He is not the only member of the clergy ICE has assaulted. I'm not _that_ conscious about performance when it comes to applications and the like, so I decided to install Ghostty to get some more features than Alacritty... that being said, it's noticeably slower to open a new window, which surprised me. I'll still try to it for now, but I'm a bit surprised.

She was in international waters when Israel illegally boarded her ship, detained her, and then bought her into Israel before shipping her to Greece.

That sounds like a lot of things but "deported" is not one of them.

I think a lot of people who are reasonable AI skeptics are saying things like “I don’t see a reliable use for LLMs in areas I’m an expert in” and that those folks are quite distinct from people who argue that LLMs don’t have capabilities that they clearly do

Maga is fundamentally a populist white racism. The slogan "Make America Great Again" is more accurately described as "Make White America Greater." The fact that the tariff policy insisted on a 50% tariff only on steel and aluminum stems from the concentration of these groups in the Rust Belt. The massive crackdown on illegal immigrants at the Hyundai-LG Energy Solutions joint venture plant in Georgia must be understood in this context. The scenes of our workers being chained and escorted away were reminiscent of the dragging of African slaves in the 18th and 19th centuries. The Department of Homeland Security boasted of "the largest single-site raid in history," and Immigration and Customs Enforcement even brazenly released footage of the raid, which was highly violating human rights, as if to boast of their "achievement." Far-right whites may have secretly rejoiced. Even politicians like the Georgia governor and local lawmakers, who had been active in attracting factories, have shifted their stance and sympathized with their grievances. This is likely because it's difficult to ignore the anti-immigrant sentiment of native Americans. Like the McCarthyism that swept through American society in the 1950s, irrational madness dominates American society. The recent visa issue, which could have been resolved diplomatically with advance notice from an ally, is difficult to explain beyond political maneuvering. The fact that they mobilized helicopters and armored vehicles for show, as if they had been caught, is difficult to explain.

I really love this post, it tries to bring some rigor to the cost benefit analysis. It shows how if you shift some of the variables by just a little bit it quickly becomes a cost and not a gain.

As in last week’s example of simple ROI arithmetic, we will put our costs in the numerator, and our benefits in the denominator. FF = W + I + C + E P H The idea here is that for each prompt, the minimum amount of time-equivalent cost possible is W + I + C + E . The user must, at least once, write a prompt, wait for inference to run, then check the output; and, of course, pay any costs to Mallory’s vendor. If the probability of a correct answer is P = 1 3 , then they will do this entire process 3 times10, so we put P in the denominator. Finally, we divide everything by H , because we are trying to determine if we are actually saving any time or money, versus just letting our existing human, who has to be driving this process anyway, do the whole thing. If the Futzing Fraction evaluates to a number greater than 1, as previously discussed, you are a bozo; you’re spending more time futzing with Mallory than getting value out of it. That brings us to the “sad” path. Mallory happens to formulate an incorrect answer. Bob investigates this answer. Bob does not realize that this answer is incorrect because he is unable to recognize any inconsistencies with his existing, incomplete knowledge of the system. Bob integrates Mallory’s incorrect information of the system into his mental model. Bob proceeds to make a larger and larger mess of his work, based on an incorrect mental model. Eventually, Bob asks Alice a new, worse question, based on this incorrect understanding. Sadly we cannot return to the happy path at this point, because now Alice must unravel the complex series of confusing misunderstandings that Mallory has unfortunately conveyed to Bob at this point. In the really sad case, Bob actually doesn’t believe Alice for a while, because Mallory seems unbiased17, and Alice has to waste even more time convincing Bob before she can simply explain to him. Now, we have wasted some of Bob’s time, and some of Alice’s time. Everything from step 5-10 is C , and as soon as Alice gets involved, we are now adding to C at double real-time. If more team members are pulled in to the investigation, you are now multiplying C by the number of investigators, potentially running at triple or
